New layout design advice/critique
I am working on design proposals for a new layout for a 'workshop' in our detached garage. I have two basic designs to review for advice/critique. I will present "Plan A" in this message thread.
Starting with John Armstrong's 'Givens/Druthers'.

Advise on Repairing (new) Walthers Proto 2000 USRA 0-6-0 Side Rods
I have recently started running this new loco on the BQR and have been impressed by how well it handled turnouts and problematic frogs. Unlike my older 0-8-0 from the same series that was very picky about power, this one has been very well behaved. The key design change appears to be that the 0-6-0 has power pickups on the tender rather than the loco.
Preparing Flex Track for Painting/Weathering
Is it necessary to wash flex track in a detergent solution before laying it to prepare it for painting/weathering with acrylic latex paint, e.g. Polly Scale? I had read someplace that someone had reported adhesion problems in painting the plastic ties on flex track with these types of paints and thought the problem might be due to some residue on the plastic ties, e.g. mold release chemicals.
Thanks for your help,
Bob

Dust Busting... Cleaning the layout
Hey Everyone...
How do you clean your layout without damaging fragile details like trees and static grass?
I mean, removing the layer of dust that inevitably builds up over time.
Or do you have a magic method of keeping dust off your layout to start with?
- Bill (wishing I had a layout to clean right now)

Small cost, great effect...
Hi all,
today I've been working on a small cost project.
BLair Line Ho scale Treated Pile O' Ties. (LLC #2811)
To be on the safe side, first thing I did was spraying them with dull coat, since they needed some weathering and dry brushing.
MRC 0001665 Sound Decoder
Anyone had experience with the MRC 0001665 sound decoders?
Likewise the Digitrax Sound bug and SFX 0416 sound decoders?
any advice appreciated.

Car storage - keep the boxes, or not?
As I build more kits to increase my fleet of rolling stock, I am left with a question. What do I do with the boxes the kits came in? My first thought was to toss them, since the cars will be stored on the layout or (eventually) in storage drawers. But something in the back of my mind is saying that's a bad idea, even if I can't figure out exactly why.

One man's SPAM is another man's ?????
Just a question on what happens to a post that I may have checked as being what I thought would be SPAM?
About 10 minutes ago there was a post about handbags and I marked it as Spam. I know the MODS will look at that and if it is deemed to not be Spam it will be 'unchecked'. If not does the post remain 'invisible' to everyone reading the posts?

Sound only decoders
Hi guys,
I have a number of steam locomotives as well as diesels that have the normal decoders installed. Is it possible to install a sound only decoder that works in conjunction with existing decoder?
If so , can anyone recommend which decoder could work?
Would hate to have to remove the existing decoders. This would be very costly for me!!
Miniature Rock and Gravel
Love all the features this online magazine has. I have been in the hobby for many years, and recently started converting my layout over to DCC. In the process, I have decided to "revamp" some of the layout and add more trackage as well. In the past, I have gone up to the Cascade Sub above Oakridge, OR for the fine dirt that I found in the cuts at sidings like Heather, Fields and Wicopee.
