Accurail USRA 55 ton undec hopper question

I'm looking into starting to acquire coal hoppers for my layout.  What is the difference between the Accurail series 2400 and series 2500 undec coal hoppers? The only difference I can tell is that Accurail list one series with the description "as built". In all my years in the hobby, that's a new one on me.  Right now I'm debating ordering total undecs or data only cars but I'd like to know the difference in the two series of undecs.

My Layout is Bugging Me

Yup, my layout has bugs.  Little tiny bugs.   I live in the North East and my layout is in the basement.   I noticed that my layout has little tiny bugs (smaller than a nat) they don't seem to fly though.  I found them crawling in the static grass and on the ballast.   I try to keep the train room clean, dry, and well ventilated.   I dispose of all cardboard and even paint the bench work (both sides) to keep exposed wood.

Any ideas about getting rid of them?

Painting and Isopropyl Achohol

All,

I am looking for a bit of advice. I have a completed structure that I have weathered and put the final coat of dull clear coat on. I was working on it yesterday, adding some "weeds" to the base of the foundation. I decided to use Isopropyl Alcohol to allow the scenery glue to flow easier. This turned out to be a mistake. Now the side of my building has turned white. I have tryed to clean it off with soap and water but there was not improvement.

Does anyone have any advice on how to correct this problem. Can I add another coat of dull?

Rock of Ages 0-6-2t

For my layout, the major local quarry (Rock of Ages) owned and used a number of small steam locomotives. Some of these were tank engines, including a pair of 0-6-2s from Baldwin that were sold to the quarry by the Barre and Chelsea railway in 1948 and 1952.

The following two images are not mine, and are used without permission.

Central Vermont 3901

The Central Vermont Railway only had two RS-3s, and only had those for a couple of years before they were transferred to its sister the Grand Trunk.

I love the lines on the RS-3, and even though it's a bit of a squeeze in my timeline,  I had purchased one when I first started in the hobby in 2008. I installed my first sound decoder in it, and than proceeded to immediately plunge it to its death; off the layout and onto a concrete floor.

Detroit Terminal Railroad: Highland Park Industrial Track

It's been a very productive couple of days. Once again, I've added a new post over at Motor City Rollercoaster, my blog about modeling a modern day version of the Detroit Terminal Railroad. In this installment, I take a detailed look at the relatively short but operationally challenging Highland Park Industrial Track.

I hope you enjoy it.

Progress on the Hudson and Hartford

I am finally getting rod of a lot of the junk that is cluttering my bench work and roadbed. it had to be done because I was unable to lay any track on it due to the fact a certain part of my layout had to serve as  shipping point for my wife's eBay business and my youngest son's shipping business. It doesn't work amd that is no longer acceptable.

So how am I accomplishing this major chore? It's being moved to another room. So now I will finally get run trains which I haven't been able to do for a couple of years now. It's about time.

Need help with two LifeLike Geeps (GP7 and GP30) with different issues.

I have recently acquired two Life Like Geeps. One is a GP7 Phase II that was new in box. The other is a GP30 that was lightly used. My goal was to add DCC to both and consider sound for both. I got 2 Digitrax DH165LO  decoders as plug in replacements for the factory light boards. Worked fine in the GP7, but no lights in the GP30.

Best type of building for layout design/build

I have a basic question on a building for construction of a layout.  It is a very basic and maybe simple question.  If a person was building an approximately 3000 SF building for a layout, is it better to have a building that is say 150 feet long and 20 feet wide or a building that is 75 feet long and 40 feet wide.  It would seem the only reason to have benchwork curving all over in a building is because the building is not long enough to have a long run.  It would seem to make sense to have as long a straight run as possible for operations, scenery, etc.
