Optimum train length on medium to larger layouts

Hi all,

Just as I have put down the last bit of track on my very small N scale shelf layout, the wife has ideas of moving house in the coming year. It's a shame to start over again and not completing what I have build so far but I also look forward to a larger area to work in. Currently I have about 290cm long shelf, 30cm wide with the small leg of the letter L coming off on one end, giving me 80cm to curve around.

Locos - Rolling stock (general)

We have all seen them - Bachmann's Heavy duty flatcar was sold in almost every one of their larger sets sporting stakes and Logs. They come in either red L&N livery or blue Great Northern livery. Now, before you scoff at the car, hold it up next to a Bluebox Athearn Heavy Duty flat and you may notice they are very very similar to each other. Very similar indeed!

Benchwork - Roadbed

I'm excited. Going full throttle on building the bench work. I'm lucky due to getting used wood. The L-girders were already assembled and holes drilled for wiring. This will be Multi-level with a helix part mushroom.

Use a decoder to index a turntable

Is there room for a newby in this forum? I have a decoder question. I recently came across a good deal on a Walther's 90' turntable model 3171. This unit only has a DC motor but no controls. It requires a reversing switch and push buttons to operate. I am wondering if anyone has, or if it is possible to, hook up a decoder to index operation. Any suggestions as to what decoder to use would also be extremely helpful.
