GP38-2 drives - Athearn Genesis vs. Atlas

I'm thinking of adding some Athearn Genesis GP38-2s to the fleet, but would like to know how the drive quality compares with the Atlas GP38/GP38-2 (and Kato SD38-2s, for that matter), and how well the two can be made to MU with DCC. Any input would be appreciated.

Spray painting in the cold?

I don't have an operating airbrush, and do all of my rolling stock painting using (gasp!) rattle cans. My spray booth for this work looks remarkably similar to my garage. All of my prep work, even the rattle can shaking, takes place in my basement, and the painted models are immediately brought inside after paint application, but the actual painting takes place in the garage. Yes, the basement does get a little hint of spray paint aroma sometimes while the paint dries, but nothing obnoxious.

Filtering DCC for analog operation?

Any Electrical Engineers out there?  I wondered if this might be possible/practical..

Would it be possible to build some sort of filter circuit which could be switched into the main DCC track bus, and which would convert the bit stretched AC of the DCC signal for address 00 into a smooth DC voltage?  I realize that it wouldn't run a DCC loco any more, but it would be nice to have the ability to run a DC loco without worrying about the noise and damage caused by DCC.

Wireing layout for DC & DCC

Wire a layout with power feeders on both rails on blocks and insulated joiners on both rails with a DPDT switch can you run a layout on DC or DCC by throwing the switch? Will this cause problems if so what are they? Is there a work around for the problems?

Silvester Layout 2014

Early these month I attended an operating session at the home of a friend of mine. He held his annual silvester layout in the weeks after christmas.

Operating cooling fans for HO

With the newer DCC sound decoders spewing all kinds of heat, would this be a viable option to install a micro cooling fan such as this one from e-bay?

A work caboose for the Bradford Valley Lumber Co.

Hi all,

I've started kitbashing a work caboose for my On30 Bradford Valley Lumber Co. layout, to complete my work train.  I wanted a model that looked like it had been built in a backwoods workshop.  After learning that Boulder Valley Models makes cast resin baggage car sides, I decided to combine these with a Bachmann short caboose to get the car I wanted.

Here's what I started out with:

Rebuilding a Duck Under

As I continue to rebuild my layout to accommodate my GE 85 tonners and give them a place to take their ore to, I had to update my duck under. Now I have seen several different ways to build a duck under, whether a swing or lift system, and I would say what type you build is dependent on the space you have.
