Removing old ballast and glue

I have a couple of Peco turnouts that I want to reuse. There is some glue and ballast on them. Aside from picking it off with a screwdriver, is there anything I can soak them in to release the glue. I have thought of water, alcohol or vinegar but wondering if anyone has tried any of the above.

weathering and graffiti one side

When modeling prototype rolling stock from a photo you usually only have a photo showing one side of the actual car so you don't know what the opposite side of the car looks like. In this case I'm thinking of just weathering one side per the prototype including graffiti and leaving the opposite side as "new."  When the car is on your layout you only see one side a time anyway. Has anyone done this?

Question on JMRI Working With Tablets

My 5 year old Windows 7 laptop has decided it doesn't want to work any longer.  I'm pretty sure it's not worth repairing, and I've been wanting to replace it with a Tablet anyway.  So now, I'm looking for a Tablet.  Of course, this new Tablet must be perfect in every way wink

I have two key requirements.

Light-weight Alternative for Ballast

Getting close to the point where I'll be laying some track on my O-scale "Chicago Fork" layout.

One of the goals of the layout was to be light-weight and portable.  So I've been thinking about light-weight scenery options; and one item that comes to mind is the ballast.

Now then, each module is only 4' long and there is probably around 10' of track on the "busiest" one; so probably not talking about a great deal of weight ... but when things are getting measured in pounds and ounces, even a little bit can add up.

GP 7/9 Handrails

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone would know if the handrails from any other Athearn GP loco would fit BB GP 7/9s? I have a half dozen GP 9s that I bought at a yard sale, in good condition, but no handrails for any of them. I have not had any luck finding handrail sets for these anywhere. I thought possibly there were other GPs that have the same configuration....maybe?

Any way, thanks for any help.
