Ouch or how to recover from an oops

So, I have been working on a church structure for some time now.  The whole structure is cast from a  plaster material in small sections and assembled, including the spire.  So, I have been trying to decide on 1 of 2 options for the top of the spire.  1. was to just let it come to a point and roof tile all the way up.  2. was to lop off a small section and put a cross up there.

Allagash pics - D&H and Maine Central run-through power at Madrid

Hey guys,

Couple new pics from Allagash country (Maine!). Some big changes have come to the Allagash resulting in scenes like the following.

Moderator note: Threads with lots of pictures work best if the initial post is very brief and you post all the juicy content in the *first* comment post on the thread. That way the repeated first post on subsequent pages doesn't have a lot of content to scroll through to get to the rest of the thread. We moved the pictures down a post.

Coal Loader Part 5, Update

I've put my project on hold due to we are buying a home. So you know what that means. Packing up the trains and layout. The Good news is the new place will give me a bit more room. So hopefully I will finish this project by years end.

Todays update is the first stage of assembling to Crane assembly.

How do you make a complex metal shape?

I am designing an HO scale 0-6-0, and I'm trying to figure out how to make a weight for it.  Small locomotives benefit from as much weight as possible, so making the weight fit every available bit of space is a priority.  To that end, I've drawn a weight which fits very neatly inside the planned model:

Timing of photo backdrop placement

I've been reading many articles and I'm a bit confused as to when I should put in the photo backdrop I'm planning. It seems it needs to go in earlier as I don't see trying to weasel it around behind landforms, buildings, trees, etc. especially with adhesive on the back. It certainly seems you should get the material you're using for a backdrop in (styrene, Masonite, etc.) And then painted if you're not using a full height photo (some only use the landform portion and cut out the sky.)

Walther's Sperry Rail Service DCC Install

Walthers Sperry Rail Service Car
DCC Install

I began by testing the car on a friends DC layout. It is a smooth running unit. I have the newer model where the drive is improved to a geared power truck.

Working Hot Box/DED Detector for Operational Realism

While brainstorming about operations on my future layout, I thought it would be interesting to come up with a device that would play back a random recording when an operator passed a certain point on my layout- a hot box/dragging equipment detector. You could have 10 different MP3's, and perhaps 8 of them would be "no defects" and the last two could be some kind of defect alert. When an operator passes a certain point on the layout, they have to press a button, which will activate the random recording selection.

Any idea what these are?

Anyone know what these two circled fixtures are in this picture?

The timeframe is 1966 in Dover, NH.  To the right of these is the access road up the slope that is the road connecting the yard to Oak St.  The grade is way too steep that there ever could have been tracks there. And anyway that road is the only way in and out of the yard for cars.  Unfortunately these are no longer there today to examine.
