Tenmile Creek Tunnel Portals

Hi Joe,

Love the Tenmile Creek video series. I'm making the tunnel portals out of 2x6's as you are showing in your video. So far so good, the one thing that I had to do by eyeball is buy the stripwood for the decorative trim. I bought 1/16" x 1/16" and 1/16" x 1/8" but now that I'm at that stage of construction it feels like I may have guessed incorrectly. Would you mind saying what size stripwood you ended up using...

Sidewalk corners question (1960s)

Hello everyone

Quick question. I have seen that in modern times (post 70s), there has been some sort of standardization on having the sidewalk corners depressed.

In 70s and earlier photos (LA area), I have seen the corners being depressed by having a different slope/contour (appearing almost non standardized vs modern equivalents).

Tsunami2 with Current Keeper Sound Reduction

I have a Bachmann On30 Porter with a Tsunami2 decoder and Current Keeper installed. When powered by the Current Keeper the sound volume is significantly reduced (by about half). It runs the motor just fine for several seconds. This isn't a big problem as, ideally, power dropouts should be very brief. I am just curious to know if there is some fix in the decoder programming? My Google-fu and the search box yielded nothing. Thanks, David Stewart

My First Layout Video Update: 3D Printed Canoe, Demolishion Progress, Walthers Boxcar Review, and More!

Hey all,

I just published my first layout video update. So far I have been told that I should relax a little to ease my tone of voice (I don't normally sound this bad) and to make things flow a little better. I'm looking for suggestions/advice/comments so I can improve things without making myself look like a fool even more.

Computing ballast coverage

The question keeps coming up ... how much ballast does it take to ballast model railroad track?

Well, it's going to vary by scale.

In HO, one level teaspoon of ballast will do about 1 inch of track. You can test in the other scales to get a similar approximation, my guess (without testing it) would be a level teaspoon of ballast will do two inches of track in N, or half an inch of track in O.

Main Line feet calculation

Just curious how does the magazine write ups on layout features figure main line trackage? I have a single main line with passing sidings. Is main line just calculated without thee passing siding or is passings also considered main line trackage.

Is any part of yards considered as well?

I'm trying to document some of this since its already been asked a few times and I want to be correct. I know HO is about 60.62 feet to the scale mile too.

Thanks!

ME Turnout Positioning

Starting to work on a first layout (HO) and have question on using ME #6 turnouts.

1) If I place a LH turnout at the end of the diverging route of a RH turnout what would be the track spacing if I continued with straight tracks on the trough  route of the RH turnout and the diverging route of the LH turnout? Trying to layout the template from ME I get it is close to 1 9/16". If this is correct is that spacing too tight for a yard?

Scratch building a CNoR Third Class Station

Even though I don’t run passenger equipment on any regular basis, I wanted to have an old station for my layout, it has seen better days, bit of modernization but retaining the old charm of days gone by. There are many station kits available to suit the design requirements, however a winter project with a little more involvement was what I wanted to get into. For inspiration I chose a CNoR third class station like one sitting in a field just a mile down the road here in Emo, Ontario. This, the old Barwick Station, was a perfect candidate.

Control Panel in a Barge

Not wanting to detract from this water front scene I was struggling with control panel design and placement.

Switch issues after ballasting - HELP

I recently ballasted some switches for the first time. I have made certain to clean all guard rails and frogs of any ballast and cleaned the track. Locomotives that passed through the switches without an issue before ballasting now hang up or loose power at the frogs. I tried three different locos with the same results.

I am using Atlas Customer Line Code 100 switches.

Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks in advance
