JL&T Railroad Blog - Classification/Staging Yard...
Today was the official start of track laying for the new Classification/Staging Yard for the JL&T.
As I'm adding detection & signalling to the layout I wanted to complete the north & south entrances to the yard as they are detected & have signals too. This section also forms the layouts new wye, and we be the first section to have operating detection & signalling.

Micro Engineering turnouts
I'm just about ready to start laying track on my new H0n3-layout, and I've chosen to use Micro Engineering turnouts. My initial plan was to use Bullfrog turnout controls, but I think the control rod is a little bit flimsy, and I also need to cut a lot of holes to recess these into the fascia, resulting in a "messy" look. Would it be possible at all to use these turnouts manually like they are right out of the box? Or would that result in bad electrical connections after a while (like on Peco turnouts)?

The Ruphe & Tumbelle Railway Company, What's New
Hello all.
I've been posting here for a few years now and have decided that instead of starting separate little blogs for every little idea I have I should consolidate things a bit. So...
From now on, New and exciting things on the Ruphe and Tumbelle will be featured here.
(Insert trumpet fanfare)

New Product Coming - Congrats to Draw Winners!

Stay tuned - for locking sliding turnout access control covers for the Richlawn RR
Many of you may be familiar with Lance Mindheim and his excellent modeling (www.lancemindheim.com). He has a number of ideas to slow things down during operations on small layouts. One of his ideas including locking covers over his turnout controls that must be unlocked in order to access the turnout controls. The idea is that it is someone prototypical (a real RR switch must be unlocked to be thrown) and will add an additional element requiring time when operating.
Laser Occupancy Detection
There was a recent discussion of occupancy detection methods on MRH (see: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/20240 ).
I would like to add another option that involves using a small laser and phototranistor to detect when a train is occupying a section of track. I use this method rather successfully on my HO module. A laser detects when a train is on the main line so that another train that runs only on my module doesn't cross the main track at an inopportune time!
Getting a straight edge cut when scratchbuilding
As a new arrival, I've enjoyed scratchbuilding simple structures so far, from plasticard, embossed styrene, regular styrene, and sometimes wood and card too. I'm using high-school D&T methods, really: draw out the parts needed with a pencil and a steel rule, cut out with craft knife/mini saw, stick together with appropriate glue.
C&NW Stanray Sided Boxcar
To All: Today I present my scratch built C&NW Stanray sided boxcar. I modeled the car from a photo in a prototype rolling stock book. The decals were custom made for me by Ricky Rupp of Modern Rail Company. Having C&NW on both ends of the side was an unusual arrangement. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout
Google map trackplan
Hi all
I have seen pictures of people taking Google map screen shots and scaling them to ho or n adn printing them for use as a track plan.
Ive googled and searched several forums and can not find anything about this process. Any body have a link I can follow to find out more about this
Thanks
Dick
