N Peco switches Atlas switches???

My son is moving away from HO (not enough space) to N Scale that he had once before, he would like to use Atlas code 55 track and switches as opposed to PECO code 55 . Peco has a built in spring for the switches Atlas does not what are people using to keep the point blades in place , he cant afford switch machines etc.

Mining puzzle

I've come to that point where the first operating session is imminent now that the mainline has reached about the halfway mark on my HOn3 pike.  (see track plan)

I model the SP narrow gauge in 1911 and the freelance Horseshoe & Cottonwood based loosely on the Bodie & Benton.  Silver and gold mining are one of the key industries along the line.

track as a model vs. bulletproof operations HO

So, the Toma idea is motivating me to leap out of my recliner and build a 2 section LDE as a way to both enjoy hands on modeling and test ideas for a larger layout. Eventually my bigger layout will be prototype operations oriented Electrified GN Cascade Division 1955. I've been collecting a lot of brass and researching the prototype with the GNRHS for many years to that end. (NCE)

Hunting for simple signals in N scale (rookie question)

Placing this here as I'm definitely new to signals (slightly less new to the rest of the hobby, mind).

I'm looking at adding a searchlight signal (at most two) to what is effectively a 'small n scale switching layout'. I put that in quotes because it's really a scenic area connected to quite a lot of bare staging, some of which may or may not be getting fully modeled later on.

Weathering wood structure

I have a structure I am building. It is rather large and tall with it. It is about 25 scale feet square and 28 feet tall and open on two ends. The walls are to be raw wood. I have always used india ink and alcohol combined with some dry brushing to get a nice effect. However I am wondering about the wood that would be inside the structure. It will be seen but since it won't get the brunt of the weather, what color should it be? I don't think raw white of bass wood would be correct. Any ideas? I am attaching a picture of a cardboard mockup of the structure.
