When Rust is Really Rust

Friend of mine models armor and had some really realistic looking rust on his armor models. I asked what technique he used and he said real rust...

This is the technique and method to make the rust. Also, I used an extra cup of vinegar and with a wet brush make a wash as well.

The Marquette Route - 13'x27' in HO scale

Follow along as I blog the journey in building my HO scale, proto-freelanced Detroit, Mackinac and Marquette Railroad - a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway running between its namesake cities and across the Straits of Mackinac.

Track cleaning car for dust?

Hi All,  Does anyone know what a good track cleaning car for dust might be? My layout is adjacent to my wood shop so some drifting fine dust settles on the rails over a period of time. I can go over it with a dust cloth occasionally but that's not much fun so when running trains today I got to thinking about building a track cleaning car to push around the layout every month or so. Other than the dust rails are clean and not gunky so a dry cleaning method would be preferred.

Want to buy: 1:20.3 Plymouth

Hello all,

I'm interested in buying a 1:20.3 Accucraft Plymouth (like this one: https://www.accucraftestore.com/ng-plymouth-el).   I prefer a new item but will certainly consider used.

I've talked to Accucraft and searched the web and have been unable to find one.

Thank for any help you can provide!

Athearn RTR SW1500 RF&P

HI THERE! Does anyone know 1)where I can possibly find an Athearn RTR SW1500 in the RF&P paint? 2) does anyone know anyone who is willing to sell one?

None exist online anymore and I missed the one that was just on Ebay. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Flat Switching?

I model/try to model the Northeast area.  Its what I grew up with and its what I remember....gritty/in your face old school.

Ive had this bookmark lerking in my browser for years.  I love the sounds...equipment and crew.

So because MRH is so oustanding in letting ideas flow....Id like to know from all of you...what do you see wrong?

Are you old school and see nothing(like the brakeman riding the car after climbing on and trying to crank the brake wheel?)

Or are you new Rules...everyone doesnt have PPE on?

Transformer Station

I already posted this on the April Workbench thread, but I thought I'd put a longer post here. I'm using the Model Power State Power Substation kit as the transformer yard for my paper mill (paper mills suck juice, easily enough to justify respectably large supply hardware). Model Power kits are a little...basic, but with some work they can look pretty good.

ScaleImp - Imperial Metric scaling tool

In the latest MRH magazine (April 2020) Jack Burgess has an article on using calipers. I am a great fan! As I do a lot of scratchbuilding, the calipers are my go too tool for measuring and marking out. Also in that article he talks about converting measurements to scale sizes. I have done a lot of measurement conversion also. Modelling in TT scale (1:120) is one of the reasons that I scratchbuild. As I work with metric and imperial rolling stock I have had to convert between the two units of measurements, and scale as well.
