Replacement Trucks - Opinions needed

Hi

I have acquired a reasonable quantity of second hand rolling stock ranging from Athearn Blue Box kits to a mixed bag of other built up stock of unknown manufacturer.  Stock is predominately Box Cars, Cabooses and Gons. The trucks and wheel sets range from very good condition to instant derailment territory.  Some have metal wheel sets but most have plastic.

staging cassettes

Hi all,  could some one give me a visual or detailed description on how to build and attach a staging cassette.  I am totally new to benchwork and construciton in general.

Thanks,  David

Intermittent dcc loco running

Have a pfm united gn 4-6-2 with sound that runs intermittently. That is it may go a couple of inches with the sound operating, stop and possibly resume again or short out with no resumption possible when I hit the reset button. Any suggestions? Thanks . jack F

The steam and smoke are absent!

I know that I'm not the only one bothered by this, and I know that the problems seem insurmountable. But so was sound in an HO loco not that many years ago, never mind N scale.

What colors should I get to paint Eastern US hills & mountains?

Since I'm sort of in limbo on my layout I thought that I would try my hand on trying to paint backdrops. I'd like to purchase the paints and supplies tomorrow so can you all suggest paint colors, brush types, ect,. Thanks!

Pantographs and other stuff

Well the weekend is here and I hope to get my 85 tonner primed by the end of the weekend.

In the mean time I have made some side pantographs for it.

Pantographs

I have some general dimensions for the side pantograph and a maintenance manual picture to help out.

A bit of brass, some solder and this is what I came up with. I just about didn't finish as my solder iron quit near the end of the adventure.

Spectrum (Bachman Industries) EMC Gas Electric Doodlebug

Just finished fixing the split gears on both of my Doodlebug's. The first set were split to the point it was easy to see the crack while mounted on the axle. The second one it was very hard to see the cracks.

Here's my fix.

First the two Doodlebug's

The two front wheel sets. Note the helical gears.

Paint, DCC and Sound in an older Walthers SW-1

I have acquired an older Walthers SW-1 (Undecorated) in which I want to put a sound decoder. I have done a couple of other sound decoder installations. In this case I'm hoping to get some advice from others who have already attempted this installation.

The loco runs smooth and quiet on DC.
