Shinohara code 83 turnouts with ME track?
I'm preparing to build an L-shaped switching layout using Micro-Engineering code 83 flex track and rail, and one spot in my plan calls for a #6 double crossover. I am trying to decide between purchasing a Shinohara double crossover or purchasing a Fast Tracks double crossover template and building one myself. For my current switching layout, I purchased a Fast Tracks code 83, #6 template for the turnouts, and the turnouts I built are very reliable.
Ballast question..
I have been making my own ballast out of crushed granite/ rock dust. I get my supply at Home Depot.. It runs about $13 for a 50 pound bag. The bags are seasonal. That all being said, does anyone else use this method? If so, I am looking for alternate sources and as always good prices... Thanks in advance.
Train Directions
Hi,
This may sound like a stupid question but I would like to know if there is a rule governing the direction a train travels on a layout. If you have double tracks both lying in an east and west direction, does the top track have trains running east to west with the bottom track running trains west to east or vice versa? I would appreciate being given some advice on this matter before I start building my first layout in HO scale. Thanks

Latest little project
One of the things I want to do on the Office Park Zone is have large-scale switch stands on along the front. Back in the 90's I picked up one of the Alder Models G-scale remote switch stand kits with the idea of some day installing it on a layout. Last year I happened across Trevor Marshall's blog where he did just that.

Soldering solution for turnout points
I have started hand laying my track after several false starts. I decided to use silver bearing solder to "weld" the points to the throw bar but was having difficulty stopping the flow of solder on the outside of the points. After going through a couple throw bars I decided to Google the problem to see what other modelers did to resolve this issue.
Yet another turntable
Been a long time coming, with a generous helping of procrastination, but at last I can turn an engine

Tram track
I would like to incorporate a tram system on my model railroad. Can someone advise recommended radius for tram track for various wheelbase trams including dual bogie trams?
Lemonade from lemons
.After doing extensive scenery work I decided to vacuum the rails. I always hate that even though I do have a small vacuum...the hose is too stiff and the rigid end is too long. I seem to always hit at least one thing!
