Trackwork

Flex Track

I'm modeling in code 100 track and  most of my track is Atlas flex track and turnouts.  I do have some ME flex track.  Probably not best to mix different MFG track together, but noticed to make curves it seems the ME flex track is better that Atlas flex track.  Due to room size I can't go with big broad curves, but between 24 and 30" would work.  Know those curves are somewhat tight for the bigger pieces of rolling stock.

Wondering if most people are using Atlas Flex track or other brands when it comes to laying out your curves?

Video on my MANUAL MAGNETIC UNCOUPLERS (on / off position)

Here is my system for uncoupling, I have 27 on my small 22" x 13' layout, one at each position that I would want to spot a car at or break a train at.

Order of wiring vs laying down roadbed

My layout has been hand tacked down for a wiring test - 2 CAB/2 Mainline, 5 Blocks and X crossover.  Its DC based on things I inherited from my Dad.  Now that I know things run as designed, I am about to lay down Woodland Scenics foam roadbed.  Should I complete that before re-wiring, or should I complete the final wiring before (as during) the laying down of roadbed?

Ballasted track noise level - a very unscientific opinion

I've been ballasting track and have noticed an (expected) increase in the noise a train makes when traveling upon it.  My layout is topped with 2" foam, has cork roadbed, and WS ballast affixed with diluted white glue.  I'd say that the sound difference between my unballasted and ballasted track is about 30% louder after ballasting.  Much has been shared about noise levels on this site and a search using the box in the upper right will return many postings.

Ballasting - what fun!

Besides building my structure I've been ballasting track on my layout - a little at a time.  Why a little at a time?

Track Build Blog 2017 - Freelance Layout with Montana late 80's influence in N Scale

Hi all

I will post all my progress of my track build in this Blog from start to finish as I go.

So I have decided on my layout design and as per previous posts I have 3 of the Modules built. I have now started to lay the foam base for the scenery and track work will begin soon. I will use a foam roadbed for the first time in place of cork, a local manufacturer has a very good product that I will use. they have 3mm single roadbed with a chamfered edge and is split down the middle and they also do a 300mm X 450mm square that I will use in the yards etc.

Lower level stagging design - N scale

Hi all

Looking for some feedback on the lower stagging design below, I want the two ends of the upper level to drop down to stagging and then be able to return again by using a reversing loop, this means using two, one at each end so to utilize space I have the left running at 4" below the upper level and the right running from the Helix at 8" below the upper level so in effect I have two seperate stagging areas.

Thoughts?

Final Layout design - N Scale

Hi again

Well I think I have what I'm looking for, gone for a much simpler design and yet still getting all the operations I want from the layout design

Here are a few pictures, I'm still not sure about the yard, comments welcome on this.

Here is Module A, the Coal Mine, I could add more but I think I will add trucks and equipment rather than more track. I may move the fuel track closer to the building so the hill can be closer and have more scenery impact with trees to match the backdrop.

using slide switches as turnout throws

I'm starting a new HO layout after a 20 year plus layoff from the hobby. I'm planning on using manual turnout throws where possible for economic reasons, but I'd rather not use Caboose throws because of their large size. Instead I'm thinking of using SPDT slide switches, wiring the switches to control the frog polarity. The appeal is that the slide part is very small and I can even cut it down smaller so it doesn't stick up above the scenery too much.

West Haven Industrial Rwy. : Throwing Points

I've been spending a lot of time over at MERG (Model Electronics Railway Group) and they have some fantastic ideas on controlling turnouts or as they call them "points". I had initially decided to use Caboose Industries Ground Throws and Tam Valley frog juicers. I do know I want juiced frogs.
