Trackwork
collision avoidance?
I came across an interesting image in a NS video about signals & operations. It looks like it is basically a turnout, but instead of turning onto a siding, you would turn onto empty space! I'm guessing this must be interlocked into the mainline up ahead so that any oncoming traffic would be routed to a derailment rather than a head-on collision. Can anyone confirm this? Might be an interesting thing to model too!

Layout Design - finding it hard to get started, companies that do track designs?
Hi Everyone,
I've got all my bench work done, but I'm really having trouble coming up with a layout design - initially i just wanted 4 tracks in a loop, but now i want something with more play value. I've been planning on making scenery out of foam at this stage (and have lots of it)
is there a such a company out there that design a track layout for me?
ICRR NEW ORLEANS circa late 1940's Layout for N-Scale
Well its finally finished (mostly, Benchwork drawings would need to be done before construction begins), and here it is for your use if you want it, and would love to get your feedback. The track plan is drawn in AutoDesk 2006 for anyone that wants it, contact me at guymartin1956@gmail.com.

Help diagnosing ballast problem
Let me start by saying I do not like laying ballast. That being said model trains is my hobby and I am trying to get ready for a layout tour in late Oct.
I have watched videos and read a number of articles describing laying ballast. I am using the method I found here on Model Railroad Hobbyist, I believe written by Charlie Comstock.

New Throwbar for Central Valley Turnouts
I started on a new industrial spur this week. I chose a Central Valley (CVT) turnout kit, partly for the challenge of trying a new throwbar idea. This is HO scale.
where can i buy 3" styrofoam?
I was watching a video about installing a walthers 130' tuntable i bought they said to use 3" styrofoam because the pit on the turntable is 2 5/8" deep.

Installing Bullfrog Switch Machines
I haven't made a ton of progress over the last few months, but I have finally completed building and installing all of my switch machines, and It's been an interesting experience.
For the first time is 12 years
For the first time is 12 years I moved one of my locos by electricity on the track. Granted it was only 6 feet of track, but it moved by itself.
Downside, I went to take a video and my camera batteries are dead.
But, it moved. By itself.

New post - more track paint / ballast ideas, and canyon scenery design
Here's another blog post... continuing my ideas on painting track and ballasting (resolved now, I hope!), and working thru the visual design for some trackwork twisting through a deep canyon.

Any interest in handlaid turnout build?
One of the many many projects on my to-do list is handlaying some track for a Free-mo module, and that involves building some turnouts. In contrast with many folks here, I do not use copper ties, jigs, kits, plans, etc., as I learned to lay track more or less in isolation, and had to make do. I was just wondering if anybody would be interested in seeing the progress whenever I get around to the job. I cannot claim to be an expert or even to lay especially good turnouts, but they seem to work well enough for my needs.
