Benchwork - Roadbed
Conduit for track feeder wires
I'm at the point in construction where I'm ready to start attaching track to roadbed. Prior to setting down the track I'll solder feeder wires to each segment. Once set in place I'll drill holes on either side of the track to drop feeder wire to the bus. Subroadbed is 2" of foam on top of 3/8" ply.
I was thinking of using either Plastruct styrene tubing or plain old aquarium tubing for a conduit through the subroadbed and running the wire through the conduit. Does anyone have experience using aquarium tubing?
Thanks.
Module Rotisserie
I watched the "Back to the Basement" TMTV video with Miles Hale that showed his module rotisserie. I thought that was a great idea so I made one. I also made a 2' x 8' module to hang on it. JoeF mentions the TOMA concept and the 2x6 module. That size doesn't work for me in my layout space but a couple 2x8 modules do. I'm actually starting my first model railroad!
Building the "I cant think of a name yet"
The last couple days I put in another 20 feet of benchwork. Another 10 will go in tomorrow. I am building it with "L" girder construction. Its just what I know and its is pretty easy to move or adjust cross members as the need arises. I also put the roadbed in the waterfront area that connects the lower and upper levels. My roadbed is either 1/2 homasote on 1/2 plywood or 2 pieces of 1/2 plywood sandwiched. On top of that is regular midwest cork. I learned about using caulk in these pages. I like that better than glue. And it holds the cork and the track just fine.
Summertime Work
WEST END PROGRESS! Been workin' on the railroad. Benchwork is almost complete with two more sections to go.
Roadbed in yards
All,
What is your favorite and least costly form of track roadbed for yards? I ask this question with these considerations....
- 3 levels of yards
- plywood (before roadbed and track) is 16 inches apart in height.
- I have 22" deep to cover for 8 yard tracks and 1 or 2 main lines on each level
- those 8 yard tracks are about 32 to 35' not counting turnouts
If it helps I really like the caulk idea for securing the track so nails are not a factor.
Union Station Engine Facility Completion - Step by Step
Even though the ATSF Paradigm Division is still in the plywood prairie style of scenery, it is now, with the completion of the Union Station Engine Facility, 100% functionally complete and operational in DCC. The first video is done in a slide format and shows the general step-by-step construction & completion of the engine facility in three phases over a two month time period (June thru August 2016). Areas of emphasis have been annotated on the individual slides and/or have additional information provided before each section of the video.
Removable end sections for a shelf layout?
Hey all. I've been away from the hobby for a few years, slowly been getting back into things, and planning a small shelf layout to give myself something to work on.
Wetterau Food Services Micro Layout
Introduction:
The Wetterau Food Services Micro Layout was completed in February of 2016. Layout planning and construction began in 2014. I am currently enjoying operations on the layout, and wanted to share the steps I followed in building this micro layout here on MRH. I have learned quite a bit in building it, and hope you will find it informative.

G-Scale Christmas layout questions
This is more of a fanciful Christmas display train rather than an attempt at a new G-Scale layout. I would like to some day have a nice garden layout to compliment my HO layouts. But that will have to wait.
