Benchwork - Roadbed
Scenic Sub Project Update 7 - Backdrop boards go up and paint colors
Backdrop construction and sky color musings...
Woodland Scenic Track-Bed. Good, bad, or ugly?
I picked up a couple boxes of this stuff some years ago when a hobby shop was closing up and because I haven't built a layout yet, I still have it.
I've used cork before and found it very noisy so I thought this would be a big improvment.
I probably have enough to do my mainline as I have this layout sketch in my head but I was wondering if I should go to something different. Thoughts?
I haven't decided yet what I'm doing for a sub roadbed and I realize now that makes a big difference in noise.
1 x 3 L-girders for legs?
I was able to score a number of "premium" 2 x 4s from a person's remodel project that went sour. I have about 30 2x4 x 7 and maybe 15 that are 3 to 4 feet long. I have to pull nails from them and because some were toe-nailed together the ends on some are chewed up. But they were up for a while and should be dry. They are generally knot-free and straight.
I also have a table saw and can rip the 2 x 4s into 1 x 4s (finished dimensions would be 3/4" by 3 1/2").
The Blob
Now that I have gotten the fascia added around the layout I am working on getting the support structure for the upper level on the peninsula roughed in. a 2x3 wall down the center of the peninsula will provide the support framework for the upper level. As well this wall will let me add shelving under the layout to clean up some of the stuff under the layout – hopefully.
Foamcore benchwork - using foamcore beams
I recently joined the forums and became an MRH subscriber. I posted a couple photos of my small Maine-themed HO layout (in progress) in the Small Layouts thread.
My benchwork - mainly a flat tabletop for now, but with some lowered cut-outs, and hills that will be added in the future - is made mostly of foamcore. This is the thin 3/16" stuff, used for poster backing and such.
I made "box beams" out of foamcore, assembled them into a rectangular frame, then glued a foamcore skin to that.
"battleship" mobile layout construction staging
Well, we've got the branchline track laid, and the central division yard is next. Once the trackwork is operational, we'll be in a position to actually "operate". To support that, I plan to build two moveable staging yards, HMS North and South, one for "north sub" and one for "south sub". The north sub must contain four trains, while the south will need tracks for six. With these modules installed, we'll be able to operate all the anticipated trains, and get a feel for operation of the division yard.
Scenic Sub Project Update 6 - Temperature adjustable LED lights and more benchwork...
Some of this info on LED lighting I posted in another topic elsewhere on MRH but it's the next update in my layout project, so here it is... :)
Keeping trains off the floor
Installed a safety device on my swing gate entry to prevent trains rolling off the edge of the layout. A switch activates a Tortiose which raises a pin up through the track.
Work bee!
This weekend I had a work bee with a friend coming over to help push the layout forward. Chris took on the challenging job of fixing some problematic switches, adding switch machines and wiring them up so they have live frogs.
Of course he asked how to identify the wires for the frogs: why, they're green of course. Everyone knows frogs are green...
