Locos - Rolling stock (general)

Weathered locos and freight cars at Sweethome Alabama (small HO layout in the UK)

I started building Sweethome Alabama exactly 2 years ago and have now reached the stage where the trackwork, electrics and scenery are pretty much complete, so much so that I have accepted an invite to attend a Model Railway exhibition in November.

I now have to concentrate on detailling and weathering the rolling stock which will run on the layout. Initially, the locomotives will be examples from CSX and Norfolk Southern, which ran in the 1990s and early 2000s, although I want to introduce some Alabama shortline Geeps, as time permits.

Steel coil cars

I need a part, people. Combing local hobby shops and swap meets hasn't worked.

What I need is either a complete angular coil hood from a 1990s Walthers cushion coil car, or just the stacking brackets that slot into the top of the hood. The road name isn't important, and I'll be happy to work out a deal with whoever can supply one.

Fabricating a bracket out of styrene is possible, but the one-piece styrene molding would probably be more durable.

Mt. Coffin & Columbia River - 23"x41" n-scale layout

Been working (slowly) on a 23"x41" n-scale layout based on the cannery industry along the Columbia River (Oregon) in the early 1900s.

Thought I'd share some construction picts since its start at the beginning of the year.

Converting Walthers Trainline Locos To DCC

I have got a few Walthers Trainline locomotives and would like to convert them toDCC. I know these are

not top of the line locos but they run smooth and have good pickup.Whith a little weathering and some

extra detail work they look pretty good. I was wondering if anybody out there has converted any of these

to DCC. There seems to be alot of metal and the motor is in contact with the frame. A little advice would

CN / CP shared grain cars?

Hi all,

Posting from the UK so access to the prototype isn't easy!

I'd like to know whether CN and CP share grain hoppers in the same way that a manifest freight will often include cars from private fleets or foreign roads.

I know that the Canadian federal and provincial governments have bought fleets which are then allocated to either CN or CP for maintenance, (e.g. Alberta's ALNX is a CN allocated car and ALPX is a CP car) but I don't know whether trains are routinely made up from a mix of each railroad's cars.

New Diesels, Old Paint?

Something has been itching me recently, and I think I’ve just figured out what it is.  I’m going to be modeling the area I grew up in, specifically the North Shore of Vancouver BC. I love the old paint styles of CN, CP and the two-tone green of BC Rail that I saw as a kid, I’ve personally never seen anything else that tickles my fancy like those paint schemes, new or old. But I also have an unhealthy attraction to brand new motive power.

Found this photo in a stashed away file...

Just this past weekend I was sorting through a file of old photos that I had stashed away in a closet. I came across this black and white photo of a Southern Pacific 2-10-2 "Santa Fe Class" locomotive in HO scale. The model and photo were owned by a good friend, Paul Jansen. The photo was taken sometime in the mid-1960's. Paul was a well known super detailer of HO brass, running his business from his home workshop in California.

JNJ TRAINS..

All-

Anyone know what happened to JnJ Trains? This N-SCALE locomotive shell manufacturer seems to have disappeared, even the website is gone..

REPAIRING DIESEL WALKWAYS

I recently stripped an HO scale Kato NW2 using Chameleon.  All was going well until I pulled the walkway from the bath and discovered that it had broken into two pieces right at the middle.  Any feedback on what caused this to happen would be appreciated.   Also need some advice on how to make repairs that will stand up over time.

More than an EM-1

Well, folks, it looks like Bachmann is coming out with a Mogul, an ALCO S-4 and ALCO FA2/FB2's in addition to the BeanO EM-1.

The Mogul reminds me of a GB&W Mogul. It will be a nice addition considering that the steam locomotives usually announced are large ones.

Now, if only someone would do a Harriman Pacific (light or heavy, machts nichts to me).
