Penn Lake Rolling Stock (Update 11/3/17)

Originally, the Penn Lake didn't have any rolling stock of it's own.   After I found Champ private name decals, that changed.   Being a coal hauler, most of the cars are hoppers, but there are a good number of flat cars, gondolas, and even a few passenger cars.

SOO LINE Business Caboose

To All: Years ago the SOO LINE RR painted a caboose for touring business men. It was used to drum up business for the line. I painted, lettered and detailed this caboose from a photo in the SOO LINE Historical Society magazine. Sorry, the pix is a little out of focus.

Decals over decals?

Hi all,

I am painting/decal-ing/weathering a PRR P5A box cab E-loco around 1951.My question is that I have MicroScale blank Keystones for the doors at either end. These however will require the road number in them.So,...should I shoot some gloss cote on these or can I just apply the numbers over the blank Keystone?

Thanks for any help,Dr D

New product announcement (Miniature Ball Bearings)

For those that like to mess around with loco mechanisms, car bearings, drive trains, animation or just stuff that moves, I have added a range of miniature ball bearings to the Proto: 87 Stores stock of useful items.

Quick overview is:

CL&N Boxcar

To All: My goal in painting and lettering freight cars is to do some of the small roads. One of these was the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens, a short line in South Carolina. It was one of the "Golden" roads of that state. The decals are by Gerald Glow, a fine maker of decals. I need to add a Tichy roofwalk, #58 Kadee couplers and metal wheels. The CN&L became part of the Atlantic Coast Line RR in 1924 and later part of CSX.

Getting started for the first time - again.

Over the past few years I have been collecting motive power for a layout that I have finally started. If I strike the correct keys, the photos will be posted here. If not, well, I'll try again! All of the models are 1/2" scale and use On30 track gauge for Gn15. If all goes well, I will make further comments...

pre-WW1 hi-rail in HO?

Has anybody tried to accurately model a pre-WW1 era car with railroad wheels in HO scale?  Powered would be nice, but dummy would be good as well.

5' wheelbase Andrews trucks in HO?

Before i start digging through my scrap bin and carrying a ruler around the hobby shop, I'm hoping maybe somebody can point me in the right direction.

I need some Andrews tender trucks with a 5' wheelbase.  Actually, all I need are the side frames, as they're going on a loco that already has wheels (tender drive).  Yes, I know it's short.  They should be 5'6, but I cannot easily change the mechanism so I want a compromise.

KCS Auto Boxcar

To All: A  freight car project I recently finished is a 50 foot wood automobile boxcar by Ambroid. I picked up this car at the Feb. Jacksonville, Florida train show for $2.50! It had the body assembled but unfinished and unpainted. That was it. I supplied the materials to add grab irons, stirrups, roof walk, underbody details, including brake rigging, coupler cut bars, air hoses, paint, decals trucks and brake wheel. I weighed, painted, lettered, weathered and dullcoated the car. I will use it on the Cotton Belt's Blue Streak Merchandise train.
