Modeling a power plant

I am wanting to add a small power plant to my layout and I'm looking for some pointers on how to model one.  I have two options for the bench work.  Option one would be built along the wall and would be roughly 12 inches deep by 8 feet in length.  Option two would be built on a peninsula and would measure 2 feet by 6 feet.

I'm looking for some helpful hints on how to pull this off.  If you have some Trackplans or photos that you would like to share, that would be extremely helpful!

GLW Freight House

After the interest Kelly's Corner generated, I decided to blog the photo of the last structure that was evaluated for my NMRA Structures AP. When this structure was given a Merit Award, I had all six required merit Awards. Now I need to get 5 more structures finished and verified.

It is 97% scratch built. It has been installed on the PebbleCreek M R C layout in South Bend, although its photo not shown on the club's web site yet.

Kelly's Corner

Wanted to share my latest structure. Only 5 more to go for the NMRA AP Structures certificate.

This is a DPM kit building. It was assembled to model a saloon (probably with “upstairs rooms”) that has gone out of business. The building is empty and for rent. The building is closed and blinds drawn everywhere but the front street level windows, allowing interested folks to look in and see the emptiness. One shade (upper right front window) is even drawn crookedly.

JL&T Railroad Blog - L&T Building Construction...

Hi All,

This will be a dedicated blog within the JL&T Blog for the construction of the buildings & industry that will grace the L&T Branch of the JL&T Railroad.

MRH challenge - a few small trees

If you look at a stand of evergreens at the edge of a cutblock, you see a lot of grey(ish) more or less bare trunks, and some branches and foliage at the top.  If the clear area was logged off a while ago there'll be all sorts of small bushes and deciduous trees growing up.  I decided to see if I could reproduce this effect at a distance with a minimum of detailed tree construction.  Here's the result of a couple of evenings work.  Each "tree"&nbs

Show us your backdrops!

Lately there have been a number of postings in various threads about backdrops, so I thought that I'd start a separate thread to have everyone share theirs in one place.  So if you've got hand painted, printed hybrid, or other style please share some pictures here.  I'll kick it off with some backdrops from my Richlawn Railroad.

A question about Fome-Cor board

I have heard of folks making building flats, backdrops and structure mockups using foam core board.  Where do you get yours and what is it faced with?  I somehow got my self on the mailing list of U.S. Plastics, and they offer this product called Fome-Cor (item #44121) http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=31148&catid=715

When Animals ATTACK.....

I had to store my Time Saver layout in the garage over the winter and this is what happened. Some animal got in and stayed a few weeks and he was eating the scenery. I think it was a squirrel....These photos are after I cleaned up the mess, but he/it even chewed up one of the vehicles. So.... BEWARE when Animals ATTACK.

MRH 120 Day Challenge - Post No. 01 - In the beginning

I accepted the MRH challenge and plan on completing the mountain area on the Richlawn Railroad.  Here's what the area looks like today:  I do have some work completed on the foam base - the hillside, tunnel & the retention pond has been dug.

Here's what the area looks like with the section removed.

Old Town Houses

To All: Here is a recent scratch built town house project that has seen better days. It will be installed on a hill next to a street leading to a railroad crossing.
