Layout design

Am I even proto-freelancing anymore?

I've finished the final version of my track plan and am very happy with it. (a walkthrough video detailing the plan will be coming shortly) The plan is the result of many, many hours of design and research as well as many additional hours of laying awake in bed thinking about that design and research.  The end result is a plan that incorporates all of my "givens and druthers," takes into consideration cost and time constraints, and very closely aligns with the prototype that I am using as inspiration...

...perhaps too closely?

Test Track ++ (O scale Switching Layout instead of a Test Track)

A blog of the construction progress.

Instead of an O scale test track, why not make a small switching layout above my work surface!

Hobby season has arrived

In just two weeks we went from 31 Celsius temperatures to snow. It is time to get back into the swing of things and get my layout going around the room.

now that my garage is built and I got all of me tools and garage junk out into the garage, I have room to continue building. First project is a work area. 6 and a half feet of desk to store stuff on. The layout will go over the desk to allow a continuos loop of track.

now to work on that portion of the track. More to come soon.

Minnesota Transfer Railway Map(s) and Details

Looking for map(s) and details of the Minnesota Transfer Railway and the interchanges with other lines, specifically NP and CRIP. I have been Googling for the last hour and cannot find anything except references to "Gateway to the Northwest - the Story of the Minnesota Transfer Railway" which I cannot find offered for sale (and probably couldn't afford anyway!). I am hoping to design a location for my model railroad that could at least allude to a real location.

Thanks for any help!

Track Plan of my Layout

You can see an updated track plan of my layout here.

Servo control of turnouts

Short story long but I'm Looking for guidance. I have a small HO switching layout. Just the track so far and beginning the scenery rough in. All the track and turnouts are handlaid and I currently have fast tracks bullfrogs for turnout control and powering frogs. I'm thinking I want to add remote control of turnouts with servos. Small layout so I only have 7 turnouts. I see that a tam valley octopus will do 8 so no issue there. I would be using panel mounted dpdt toggles for control, one side to servo other side for led panel indicators.

Downsizing My Empire: How I Shrank from a Midsize to a Small Switching Layout in the Same Basement

This is a forum post showing how I went about reducing the size of my HO scale model railroad layout. The process took a little over a year, required a lot of thought and planning, and now I feel that I am at the right size that matches my lifestyle. At the same time, I decided to adjust my model railroad prototype while keeping the central theme. I’ll explain everything that went into this and show what the layout looks now. I hope this post shows that you don’t need a large layout for your dream layout and that small layouts can be fun to build and operate as well.

Helix - clockwise vs. anti-clockwise?

Is there some kind of a standard for choosing it?

I tried looking for more details on the web but nothing meaningful comes up. Sure, there are plenty of photos of helices, but that does not tell me their background story.

Which direction should be chosen and how is that direction decided upon (is it based on the direction trains come from or go to; whether trains change direction, or not inside the helix; some other parameter, etc)?
