Layout Progress Video #1 - Surveying the Space

Here is the first of many new videos for the new layout progress series I've started on the new MFR. I wanted to take a moment to share the space and my plans for preparing the room for the layout.

Seeking Layout Advice from wiser souls.

Here is a layout plan I hope to start building soon, but I have some questions I'd like to ask as to the construction, as well as suggestions on the plan itself. I'll ask these in a separate post.

Operational Basics

Folks, this will be my attempt at a TOMA layout, representing operations in the Corpus Christi Texas area. It will be two N Scale modules, one 48 inches long and the other 44 inches long, both 20 inches deep. This is so they can fit in my travel trailer as I rat around for the railroad. I like the plan I have but nothing is set in stone. I need to have someone with a ton more experience look at it and see if there are any operational pitfalls I am blind to or any ideas or areas of improvement. Many thanks in advance for any and all help you fine folks can provide.

Anybody want realistic timetables and/or track plans?

Hello. I don't have the space or resources right now to build my own layout the way I want it, with lots and lots of operating realism. I'm more of an armchair modeler at this point, but I really enjoy planning layouts and reading + making timetables. So if anybody wants, just respond and I'll draft you a track plan based on what you say (A diagram of your space would be helpful) and I'll get something back to you.

URR Track Plan for 2x8 switching layout

Hi all:

Some time ago, I blogged about my process of choosing what to model after returning to the hobby.  I was deciding between Conrail, a proto-freelance concept I had come up with twenty years or so ago or modeling the Union Railroad in Pittsburgh.  I ended up choosing the Union Railroad because my grandfather was an engineer with them, retiring in 1976.  That is the year I have chosen to model because of the variety of motive power and operations still available.

Starting Over From Scratch

After spending some time with my current layout in it's new space and trying to come up with a design for the expanded railroad that would include those original modules, I've come to the conclusion that they just would not fit the space well and I'd be better served starting over from scratch.

With that in mind I dove into researching and designing a brand-new layout that would make best use of the space available and would allow me many, many years of enjoyment. I don't ever plan on moving from this home, so this layout will be my fourth and FINAL layout. My dream railroad.

Enterprise Yard will soon be the next project (After 3 year delay)

Salt River Valley Yard/Crew Change point (Visible Staging) is getting close to being operational.

Next project is the endpoint ATSF yard that will be know as Enterprise Yard.
