Allagash - Some recently weathered freight cars.
Hi guys and gals,
It has been a while since I've done much of anything on the railroad due to some personal/family issues. After a recent op. session, I took note of the number of un-weathered cars vs. weathered cars. Frighteningly in favor of un-weathered! I'll be doing this till the end of time.
Cleaning up my old lionel rolling stock
I would like to clean up my childhood Lionel rolling stock. The oldest pieces (1950-60) have a lot of storage grime and childhood abuse. Unfortunately this grime cannot be considered weathering by any stretch of the imagination. Any thoughts on cleaning these pieces up (and not damage lettering, etc.) would be appreciated.

Mike McGratten Memorial Train (photos and a video of its run across the Columbia & Western)
Well know N Scale modeller, hobby ambassador, Rapido Trains employee and all-round good guy Mike McGratten passed away about a year ago. Taking inspiration from Mike's "Little Puddy" project - which saw Mike send a 50' box car around the world to be photographed on dozens of layouts - Tim Horton and members of The Railwire Forum ( https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=39650.0) pulled together a special Memorial Train to honor Mike's passing and sent it on a journey visiting Railwi
Interesting Zephyr experience
A friend has a Digitrax Zephyr system. He got three new DCC-ready switch engines (I think SW1500) and one of the guys 'chipped' them for him. The engines had both 8- and 9-pin connecters, the 9-pin having the DC 'blanking plate' (which was a real pain to get out). Once 'chipped', each was tested on the main at address 03 and all worked (minor victory).

Google site search has gone away - our replacement is live
Unfortunately, Google has announced that their custom site search product has gone away and is now shut down. We've written a special script that submits a site-specific search to Google itself and opens up a new tab with the search results in your browser.
In a Google search, if you type ... site:model-railroad-hobbyist.com at the end of your search (leave a blank space) then Google will search JUST this website only for your search. That's the trick we're leveraging to make this happen.

In between - what to do with that "extra" time?
What to do with that in between time - you know... when you are supposedly not working on your layout. Here I sit after dinner with the wife watching TV and she says "what are you doing" and I say "nothing" and she says "what is that wire?" and I say "oh, I'm just twisting some wire together to make a treee armature".
Proper Perspective
Working on the benchwork for my S scale layout today I was thinking about how to handle the end of modeled run at Guild winery (the top left of the plan drawing).

A Way To Operate A 3-2-2 Inglenook Sidings Layout Prototypically(A Proto-nook)
A Inglenook layout has two turnouts consisting of three sidings. On a 3-2-2 Inglenook layout, the longest siding has a capacity of three cars. The other two sidings has a capacity of two cars apiece. The switching lead has a capacity of two cars plus the locomotive.

Videos of Grant Eastman's Beautiful SAR layout
Hi all...
I was fortunate to attend SuperTrains in Calgary a few weeks back to speak about the move of Brian Pate's KMR layout to Dawson City. I was doubly fortunate to be able to spend a very enjoyable afternoon with Grant Eastman and his stunning Southern Alberta Rail layout. Grant's work has been published and I have been a fan of his work for a long time. I also got to operate on the SAR several years ago as part of the Northern Rails 2014 op event and it was truly unique experience.

Switching Video series - C&W's Kraft Switcher
Well, with the recent Railway Modellers Meet of BC (2017) firmly in the rear view mirror, I thought I would post a set of 5 videos I shot to help visitors to the Columbia & Western "manage" the most challenging job on the C&W: the Kraft Switcher.
