Converting the HO Bachmann USRA 2-6-6-2 into a freelance Oil Burner

Hi all,

Looking for thoughts and inspiration. I haven't found a lot of examples of people sharing Steam engine mods on the web according to my google searches. Or maybe I'm just bad at googlefu.

My club has a Bachmann 2-6-6-2 that was donated to us I'd like to convert to look like an OIl burner which would be more plausible to our California theme. We are freelance, so while turning it into say a WP 2-6-6-2 might be good, it doesn't need to be that accurate.

How to reduce rolling resistance of HO metal sideframe Walthers heavyweight passenger trucks?

A Truck Tuner or similar tool works great on plastic sideframe trucks but is there an equivalent for die-cast metal sideframes such as the Walthers https://www.walthers.com/heavyweight-6-wheel-passenger-trucks-type-242a-1-pair ? Conical Dremel bits don't have the correct taper for this. I suppose I could chuck my Truck Tuner into an electric drill but using it on metal would probably dull it quickly making it useless for using on plastic trucks.

Bachmann HO 2-6-6-2 - Recurring Loose Screw Issue

Hi all,

I've used the chassis from a Bachmann HO scale USRA 2-6-6-2 as the basis for an On30 locomotive, and I've run into a recurring problem with it.  When I first received the chassis, the screw that holds the front set of driving wheels on was loose, to the point where it was being hit by the universal joint as it rotated and making a loud clicking sound.  After tightening this screw, the model ran well.

Question on 1960s-1980s UP diesel locomotives

What would be the most common diesel locomotive that Union Pacific would have been using in the grain belt during the 1960s-1980s for operations? The SD40 was a latecomer, and -2s weren't out yet.  SD24s? GP9s? GP30s? GP35s? None of these?

I used the yearly listing in UtahRails.net and saw these as common acquisitions during the late '50s and '60s.

Any input would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, what I have now are post 1980s and covered wagons.  Go figure. (exceptions, an SD40 and GP38)

Old Athearns to DCC

Although I've been in model railroading for almost 50 years, I've never gotten into DCC until now. I moved to HOn30 before DCC came into existence. I'm now getting back into HO standard gauge, and I would like to convert my old Athearn locos to DCC.

C&O Heavy Pacific, 4-6-2

I just received in the mail a Broadway Ltd heavy pacific 4-6-2 locomotive in the Erie road name. For some reason I thought I had purchased a heavy mountain 4-8-2, one of my favorite C&O engines. I was all set to convert this Erie engine into a C&O engine. ....oops

So I did a quick search to see if C&O actually utilize many/any pacifics, and I found this site that indicated that C&O was very fond of these Pacific locos,..

TCS Decoder Help

Hello MRH,

I recently installed a TCS WOWkit into my Athearn GP35. While everything seems to work okay and the sound does come out of the speaker, I have to prop up the decoder on the board for it to work. It seems a bit loose connecting to the board. Is there something I'm missing?

Spectrum J class 4-8-4's

Just happened across this older posting on a MR forum. Wonder if any others have comments/observations  about these engines?

I have a brand new one that has never had a chance to stretch its legs yet.

A tale of two boxcars

This journey started innocently enough with a desire to have some custom decals printed for my HOn3 PC&N Ry, so I contacted Bill at Precision Design Company and he was able to quickly print and ship my custom decal order.

Bill’s decals are of the highest quality, they are crisp and clean and applied wonderfully. I highly recommend him and his service for custom decals.
