Locos and rolling stock

Question about Walthers Mainline SW7

I am interested in pre-ordering a HO Walthers Mainline Union Pacific SW7 with DCC. They have two proposed numbers 1807 & 1821. The only prototype picture I have found is for 1807 and the exhaust stacks are very different and very noticeable. I could live with minor differences but this is VERY noticeable. If I get one I'll probably add some more grab irons on the side as per the photos.

Intermittent sound decoder

I have a 4-6-0 steam locomotive (On30) with a WOW101 steam V4 decoder and KA3 keep alive device. Sometimes the sound and lights work fine. Sometimes they are scratchy sounding. Most of the time they don't work at all. The loco runs fine.

Tried the reset CV8 to 2. No change other than CV1 defaulted to 3.

The connections look ok. The 8-pin connector is seated tightly to the main board.

Oh yes; I pressed 8 (mute) several times just in case I had turned it off.

What should I do next?

Milling Loco Weights for Decoder Space

I'm sure we've all been there - having to get more space inside our loco shells to accommodate DCC decoders, or in my case RailPro receivers. Usually I've had to take a hacksaw, or port-a-band saw, to those white-metal weights to cut off some height to gain the space needed. Not a fun or easy process. Fortunately I've got a connection to someone with a CNC mill. The pictures & video are posted below.

Bashing some Davenports

I've had three Davenports for some time, these haven't been the best of runners so it's was time to sort them out.

I wanted something that looked like a Baguley, that all would run well. Using a Zimo chip with a Simplex sound file and stay alive has vastly improved the running. Still lots of detailing to do but I'm pleased with the locos.

Anybody out there fool around with log cars.........

......in any scale?  I'm curious how you handled attaching and tightening the chain to hold the logs in place.

Fix sagging couplers?

Speed matching locos. a challenge

I have an F& set of Athern Genesis locos both with Tsunami sound decoders. They were, sometime in the past working well as a consist. After a longish period of inactivity I started to run the again. They aren't close to running together. The A unit starts moving quickly at speed step 1 on my NCE system with the SB5 booster. The B unit doesn't budge until speed step 5 and has a slower acceleration rate.  Obviously i did something wrong so I used CV 30 to clear and reprogram the the decoders. Everything relating to speed is the same and yet the problem persists.

Pre-Ordering Locomotives

This is a new subject for me and searches tend to turn up lamentations about pricing and inflation, but I'm wondering how pre-order works and has worked more broadly speaking from the modelers' perspective.
