Locos and rolling stock

Genesis SD60

Since Athearn just announced the SD60E with all new tooling, I am hoping that maybe, just maybe they will also do a Genesis standard cab variation.  Has anybody heard anything?

So, I have a request for anyone at the National Train Show.  Would anyone of you ask the Athearn reps if that is in the cards?

Looking for tips on "dating" rolling stock

I'm planning an HO layout that will feature the Harlan & Hollingsworth rail car shops at Wilmington, Delaware - circa 1925. It will include passenger and freight ops.

I'm fairly new to the hobby, and when I look at freight rolling stock in stores or online, I really have no idea what is or is not close to prototype for the time period. I don't plan to count rivets, but I do want to know that any stock I run is at least close to the right time period - not put into production 30, 40, or 50 years later.

It's a great time to be Canadian

I had a hard time resisting when Bowser produced SD40-2s with accurate Canadian details. My favorite loco but no way it would fit on a small switching layout. (Please, don't convince me otherwise, I have a small budget lol) Now the Red Barns are out and more lamenting is happening. LARGE MLW Alcos? Oh my, more resisting. Rapido announces Icons of Steam? Thank goodness I'm in the 70s! GMD-1? I'm no fan of the wet noodle so I'm safe!

The Smithsonian channel is running a series on combat trains. It looks like these are hour long shows in the series.More information here.  http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/shows/combat-trains/1004512

It looks as thought there will be much detail. They have some very excellent productions.

There are some on Monday evening 7/31 and also next Sunday 8/6  Check your local listings.

August 24 is the NAZI railway

Rolling Stock Tuning Tip

Having watched the John Cathcart interview (Car Department Foreman at The La Mesa Club) and followed the immensely practical and sound advice given on tuning rolling stock for reliable operation,  I am now a very strong advocate of the process John has developed. The video can be seen on this link:

I am also keenly awaiting the release of Joe Fugate's 2nd book (Rolling Stock) in the "Make it Run Like a Dream" series.

Wood Reefer Kit

I have just purchased three wooden rolling stock kits at a local train swap meet (pictured is a Streamline Swift Reefer) and have a LOT of questions.  I have searched the internet and MRH on how to make a wood kit, with limited success.  Most are a step by step of the assembly, with little of the technical aspects.  In the past, I have used whatever I had on hand, and it shows.  I have grouped my questions into three parts.

Items in Cash Converters Townsville

There is a large clutch of US-outline N items available in Cash Converters in Townsville. The items are apparently all diesel era, from multiple decades; a few locomotives, some for $30 and a Spectrum for $110, a few coaches and a lot of freight stock down to around $5. Anyone want me to look out for any particular items? (One of the items is a van in the colours of the North Pole and Southern, designated for fruit cake traffic...)

Month old railroad car--what weathering should be on it?

I'm modeling 1929, and planning on getting the Tangent 3 dome tank car with a build date of 1929.  With one month of use, in the summer, what signs of use should be showing?

(I'll be practicing on a cheap tank car first!!! Those Tangent cars are EXPENSIVE!)

HO Scale model power 4-6-2: smoke unit questions

I just bought a model power pacific on eBay broken. I got it running, but now I have a few questions. This model comes with puff-a-smoke, their name for the smoke unit. How do I use it? It is visible in the top of the stack, but I want to make sure I'm using it right. Also, I generally don't use smoke fluid, so I want to disconnect it so the stack doesn't overheat and become deformed. How can I do this without disabling the headlight? Thanks for any help.

DC locomotive needing to be hand-started - help?

Hi all,

My train club recently asked me to build a locomotive for them, to run back and forth on a mining line above the club's O/On30 layout.  The donor is one of the HO scale Bachmann Christmas Trolleys (http://shop.bachmanntrains.com/images/HO_Scale/61040.jpg).
