Photo Study of 85' TOFC flat cars in the 1970 & 1980's

I've wanted to get a better handle on the usage of 85' TOFC flat cars in the 1970's and beyond as it is a topic of interest to me and a few others here from past topics. This discussion includes a review of a number photo's on RR-FallenFlags (RRFF), RailCarPhotos (RCF) and DRGW.net so far. The most reliable photo source has been RailCarPhoto's because the pictures include data such as length, builder, photo dates and much more.

Will it run?

OK gents,

May be a silly question, but I have an Atlas locomotive without sound that I run on DCC. Soon will take to a layout that only runs on DC. My question is, will this loco run fine on the friends DC layout, and do I need to do anything special to get it to run on his layout?

Dumpster car

Hi all

I haven't seen any commercial models of dumpster cars like these (and they probably have a more technical name)

Anyone scratchbuild or bash one?  Would be a very cool and interesting car on a modern layout

thx

Jeff

Wood Cabooses

I was asked by someone when the last wood cabooses were used in North America and my guess was the late 1960s or early 1970s. I really had no answer and now I’m curious. When were the last ones in service?

Rock Island U-25-B 250

I just finished weathering my Bowser(Stewart) Rock Island U-25-B. Found it on E-bay came painted yellow for Oregon, CA & Eastern. I simply painted it and used High Ball graphics set 218. Wow. What a headache this project turned out to be! I will go into detail sometime in a future article.

Happy Early Birthday to Me - Thank You Michael Rose

I was joking when I told Michael on his thread on this site that I'd store his new HO German doodlebug at my home so he wouldn't be tempted to switch back from N scale to German HO scale.  So what happens when the Mrs. and I show up for a visit yesterday?  He gives me the doodlebug as a birthday present!  It is a beautiful unit and it looks great on my tourist doodlebug line on my layout.  And besides this wonderful present we were treated to delicious German food and coffiee!  We had a wonderful time - thank you!

Staying On Track

So, about a month ago, I got a Bachmann Spectrum "George Washington" set... and as much as I LOVE the set, the engine has been an endless heartache. It's a Heavy Mountain 4-8-2 with a Vandy tender (in case folks are unfamiliar with the set... I believe it came out in 2002?) and it's beautiful.

Front Couplers on Steam Locomotives

This is my model railroad gripe of the day.  I just received an Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 in today's mail.  I unpack it and what do I find? A dummy coupler on the front pilot.   Now I guess I shouldn't complain too much because I intend to rework it to resemble a CB&Q locomotive for my 1955 Centralia, IL layout.  But come on, isn't Athearn Genesis supposed to be top of their line?  Some of us actually switch with our steam locomotives and this requires an operable front coupler.

Building Brass Kits - Reference Material?

Hey all,

I'm planning to do some brass locomotive kits and being a complete novice when it comes to kit building a brass locomotive I'm wondering if any of you have and good reference books, websites or videos that are a good jumping off point for getting into these types of kits?

Cheers
Luke
