Creating a N Scale GP40-2LW for the KCS

Folks, I am looking for some help. I freely admit I am not too smart on trains and such and I have stumbled upon the GP40-2LW that has been used by the KCS via the CN. I would like to create a pair of these locomotives for my layout. I have looked here and I couldn't find a post about this possible kitbash or I just plain missed it and if so I apologize. I understand I will probably have to use a GP40-2 as a base but I am at an utter loss as to what cab/hood I might have to dig up/create for this monsta'.

ROLLING STOCK AND N-SCALE CODE 55 TRACK

I am planning on using Code 55 track on my new n-scale layout.  I understand that on some rolling stock the wheel flanges are too wide for Code 55 track, but will fit Code 80.

When looking at purchasing rolling stock, how do I tell that cars/ motive power I buy will have flanges that will fit Code 55 track?  Are they labeled in a special way?

Anyone have an ORER from 1991 or newer?

I'm trying to research some information on Norfolk Southern depressed center flatcars.  The only ORER I currently have is from October 1988, and NS as we know it now didn't come into existence until 1990. Hence, Norfolk Southern doesn't even exist in my book.

I'm looking for details on depressed center flatcars around the number series containing NS 185220.  In general, I'm also looking for details on other similar cars with AAR type codes F431 and/or F331.

Thanks!

Craig

What can cause a surging locomotive

I have an Athearn HO scale Big-Boy with a QSI Titan-U decoder. Everything runs well except sometimes the locomotive surges. A fast-slow-fast cycle that lasts about 1-1.5 seconds. It is most noticeable when pulling a long train and the caboose oscilates back and forth. I think the coupler slack seems to accentuate the speed change.

Some in the club think it is a mechanical problem. I checked the side rods and none of them seem to be binding.

I think it might be a decoder setting, maybe a BEMF setting.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Flying Scotsman slips, Garratts rule, and double Fairlies to Blaenau Ffestiniog

When you're in the U.K., there are always too many trains and too little time. I can't post what's on my phone, but I can link to some YouTube videos that illustrate what I'm seeing.

Proto 2000 FA-1 vs FA-2

Hello

When Proto 2000 did their Alco FA-1 and FA-2 models a number of years ago, did they use the same tooling for both the FA-1 and FA-2 or was it actually different? If yes, was the FA-1 or the FA-2 used for the base tooling?
