Working on a new scene with old equipment

Gang,

My friend wants a scene with a couple of cars (not specific as to the type or purpose ) pushed off into the weeds. I traded him a bunch of gondolas in exchange for building this scene for him. So, now I have to deliver! As I thought about it, I remembered a scene with modified box cars like this:

Simple concept for passengers getting on the train

I had an idea for a simple bit of legerdemain to create the illusion of people getting on and off a train, but at a complexity level that many people should be able to do.  (Disclaimer:  I have not tried this, and my planned layout won't make this useful.)

Highway Overpass: Question about a specific bridge...(Pasadena)

Hi all,

I am about to work on the piers/supports on a highway overpass bridge on my layout. The bridge will represent the Fair Oaks Avenue bridge / overpass on the Pasadena subdivision as it was in it's steel-plate-girder form (sometime in mid-early 70s it got rebuilt into a modern concrete version as it looks today).

Ethanol Plant Diorama in HO Scale

This is my recently completed ethanol plant. The table measures 8' X 3' 6" and has insulation board placed on top. I spray painted large evergreen sheets with Rust-Oleum Desert Bisque for texture and applied them to the board. All buildings are from Walthers Cornerstone North American Ethanol Plant Series. A combination of Walthers and Plastruct parts are used for ethanol and water piping.

Turn of the century backdrops. (Around 1890-1910)

I am looking for a backdrop for a turn of the century module. My Google searches are not coming up with anything. An example of what i'm looking for can be seen at the bottom of this page. https://www.nscalesupply.com/DET/DET-Details.html
I'm making a small module/diorama for my wife.
Thanks
Steve

Temporary buildings

Anyone have temporary buildings on their layout as place holders for the eventual actual model? I'd like some suggestions for materials and construction method, and painting them for maximum effect at minimal effort. I think simple throw away buildings could be very useful as tools to view and finalize the eventual scene as well as stand-ins for operations. Photos and construction techniques should make an interesting discussion thread.....DaveB

Weathering a coal tower --a new approach (as far as I know)

Here are two photos.  The first is a photo of the White River Junction coal tower -- in the 50's at an age of 30 or so. The second is my attempt at weathering my model of that tower.  The challenge here is two fold-  one is to get the right overall color -- which is a grimy brownish grey.  The second challenge is creating the illusion of the lines in the concrete which were left when the concrete forms were  removed.  I tried all sorts of things to create a sense of the concrete form lines - without much success (light pencil lines, brush strokes)

The New MicroMark Silhouette Cameo 3

Has anyone had experience using this machine for making HO scale structures? If so please post your results and any other info, such as thickness of material especially styrene and ease of the software use that comes with it. How accurate is it?

Thanks

Richard

Pallet Painting/weathering

I have a couple dozen HO scale pallets from 3 different manufacturers/importers. Some are a light grey, some are very light tan, and the rest are dark brown. None of these colors are realistic looking. Any suggestions as to how to paint/weather these so they look more scale-like?
