Extruded Styrofoam-Compatible Rattle Can Paint

I've started painting my trackwork in Casper yard, which is laid on cork on pink styrofoam.

To begin I've put a general coating of brown over track, cork and foam. I'm using a Rustoleum flat brown.

I've discovered that it is not totally friendly to extruded pink styrofoam. Here's a picture of what I'm getting on the foam:

Any tips for making wood structure kits light tight?

I am wondering if any of you have any neat tricks for making a laser-cut wood structure kit light tight.  I am putting together a Blair Line kit and have put in some interior details and some LED interior lighting.  When I test fit the various roof panels, they look like perfect fits.  But, when I darken the room and turn on the interior lights, there are various places along the roof eaves where light leaks out-- even though with lights off the seam looks tight and true.

Old tires for Harbor Fenders / Bumpers

Gang,

I found some 1/64 monster trucks at the resale shop. They have VERY large rubber tires. Since each truck was only $0.69 each, I figured each tire was valued at $0.17 and that seemed worth the gamble. Here they are, they measure 5 feet wide and 10 feet tall, probably the size of some large mining equipment tires?

What is the shelf life of unopened Sculptamold bags?

I'm getting read to do some scenery work. While rummaging through my old supplies I came across a couple of unopened bags of Sculptamold. The bags still feel "squishy" -- that is, I don't feel any lumps in the powder but I am pretty sure they are on the order of 20 years old, plus or minus. Does anyone know if this stuff is still good or should I toss it and just get fresh product? I would hate to get it on my layout and create a lot of rework for myself. On the other hand, I hate needlessly filling land fills.

Thanks, Vince

Scratch Building, help with what glues I will need.

Kicking off my first large scale scratch build / kit bash.

For this project I will have several different materials that I will need to glue.

Glue for styrene. ( I will be attaching a lot of Plastruct to Walthers etc kits)

Glue for Acrylic

not all of my joints will have perfect edge.  (saw cut and not all clean snap cuts)

Glue for styrene to acrylic

Thanks for the input.

Animating a Walthers HO Scale Rotary Dumper

I'm getting ready to lay the track through the wood chip unloading area on my DOMTAR Pulp and Paper Mill layout and thought it would be prudent to figure out how I'm going to animate my Walthers HO Scale Rotary Dumper kit (just in case I have to move the track because of bulky under-layout components conflicting with the bench work).

Does anyone have a step-by-step of how to modify the Walthers rotary dumper to achieve reliable animation?

Abandonned Kennecot Mine in Alaska photo:

For those modeling mining scenes, I saw this photo on the "I Love Alaska" facebook site.  Sorry,  it wouldn't let me copy the picture, but could copy the link address.  It might be interesting and useful to some.

Ideas for representing "ballast-less" track

Hi all,

I have started doing scenery work on some modules on my layout and i am looking for ideas on how to represent "ballast-less-looking" mainlines and sidings. Searching and reading around i came across this very informative thread here:

Larger chopper

Is anyone aware of a larger type chopper. One that would be used for maybe up to 5"  multiple cuts in basswood ?

Always seem to run out of setting on my chopper for O scale.  Thanks

Modeling fall protection systems at unloading sheds

Has anyone modeled the steel columns and beams used at grain facilities to protect workers walking on the top of the hoppers?  Did you just scrachbuild it kitbash from something else?  It seems easy enough to use a solid post and I beam crosspiece, but curious to see what people have done to model the base of the column and the joint between the column and beam.
