Small issues with zip texturing

A couple of numbers back, Joe Fugate had an excellent article about zip texturing. I've found the method working excellent on foam support, but recently I tried adding some plaster to simulate small earth irregularities. After painting the foam + plaster with some brown color, I went on to spraying the whole area lightly, just as the article says. Unfortunately, the plaster portions "suck up" the water incredibly fast. One resolution to this problem i found to be sifting the "earth" formula and then mist the whole area.

Static Grass wheat field...

Okay, I've finally gotten to put my static grass machine (built using Joe Fugate's design) to the use it was created for - laying a wheat field.

It's not perfect by any means, but I think it's not too bad a representation. Taller grass would probably be better, but I haven't found that anyone makes it longer than 6.5mm in length. I'm well aware that it needs some trimming along the front edge as well.

Real twigs and branches

Can you use real wood (branches, twigs, etc.) and dirt for scenery.......?  If so, what do you have to do to prepare it so that it will last.......?  Are there any downsides to using natural scenery......?

Thanks.......

Need Help!

I need your help, I had a walthers 90 foot turn table kit (HO). The word had is in bold, it seems that you can't accidently drop a hammer on it while fixing your backdrop.....it just didn't stand up to it.

So, this is where I need your help. I have been looking everywhere for a new one. Every site I go to has it on the web page, but go to order it and you find out it's on back order..... I kinda need it now, so I can lay down track to and from the turn table. If you see one, the kit not the $300. + built up....please let me know.

Logging Camp and Saw Mill trackside industries

I'm looking for suggestions on a small logging scene....HO scale.....for an area that is L-shaped 36" x36" x 24" wide. What kind of buildings/equipment would you suggest, and is there usually a main line going through the scene with a couple of spurs.....? Thanks......!

Interchangable Structures.

The problem - more structures than I have MRR real estate.   (Both made and still in their boxes)

A notion to be explored.

I'm thinking that if I could cut two identical squares of plexiglass (or sign board) and indent this square into my town, then I could have inter-changable buildings.  The old Woolworths is removed and a new high rise goes in it's place.

Anyone done something like this???

DYI Paint Booth

I'm renovating an old cold storage room as my model train workshop room.

Before I frame in one of the outside walls, I want to put in a vent for a future airbrush spray booth (yet to be built or bought).  I am planning on using a 2" plastic pipe - have some left over from a recent furnace installation - the pipe is used to vent my new high efficiency furnace.  I see most paint booths use a 4" aluminum pipe commonly used to vent your clothes dryer.

How about a Ship Mill on your waterway/River.

I found this interesting item on the net and thought that some who are modeling fictious layouts might like to have a go at it, Then again who is to say that it wasn't tried in your country.

Ship Mills were anchored in a river and were used to grind grane like any other mill.
