Building with Balsa-wood.

Building with Balsa-wood.

Not every one has easy access to Strip-wood, some like us in Australia live at the end of the hobby world. There are many hints on this site about working with Balsa-wood.

Printed Textures

Hey Folks          Here is a site I came across while searching for printed textures for a modeling project I am

working on. This site has everything imaginable and it is all free. You have to register in order

Some neat Structures I found in Oxford PA

Hey All,

I was In Oxford PA a few weeks ago and stumbled onto some very cool structures that are very model worthy.

I will probably try to scatchbuild the grain elevator for my layout, there seems to be several lumber industries alone the branch also.

I've been looking for a grain elevator up north for a while and this looks like an easy scatch build.

Hope you like them

Clump Foliage

I recently purchased Joe's DVD series.  In part 2 of the scenery DVD he mentions purchasing larger more economical sizes of foam products.  I currently use Woodland Scenics 3 quart size of light green and medium clump foliage.  What is the equivalent product number for Scenic Express or other brands?

Thanks for your help.

What is the best way to work with styrene brick sheets to make walls?

Hello,

I want to scratch build my childhood home, which was "standard" brick construction.  I've purchased a number of styrene brick pattern sheets from a number of vendors and they are all flimsy.  Walthers makes a thick styrene brick sheet, but it won't work for my application.

Cornerstone Series(R) Plastic Pellet Transfer

I am in search of this kit from Walthers or even just the Instuctions for the kit. I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to scratch build this stucture, but would like a base to go off of for building it. If anyone sould help let me know.

Thanks David G.

Gentle Ballast Sucker

When I’m spreading ballast, some will wander into areas where it shouldn’t be (like the points, frog or guard rails). To remove these errant grains I use a simple vacuum cleaner attachment. I poke two ¼" holes in the top of a one quart Mason jar and cut some lengths of ¼" irrigation drip tubing. One piece (tube #1) goes to the bottom of the jar and is long enough to reach areas I want to vacuum.

Only God can make a tree...

Apparently James Joyce wasn't a model railroader...

The weather finally cleared up enough here for me to go outside and play with noxious substances like spray paint and spray glue... I made two types of trees, both based on the basic SuperTrees armature available from Scenic Express.

The first used a fine leaf foilage product produced by Noch - I think you can get it at Scenic Express, or I know you can order it from Walthers through your LHS (http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/528-7167):

Charlie's idea on using static grass for scenery other than grass

Charlie shared an interesting technique on the "Bush Hop Field" thread  - http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/4077 on using static grass on a piece of bare copper wire and then flocking it with ground foam.  Although it doesn't look much like hops, it got me thinking about using his technique to make small (and cheap) trees & bushes.  I took some green 26 ga florist wire and multiplied it to create about 14 "limbs".  I applied the white glue and used my static applicator with a mixture of 2mm to 6mm static grass.  Once that was dried, I s

Scenic Express sifted dirt

I'd like to do some scenery on my layout this winter and I was wondering if anyone has used Scenic Express medium sifted dirt? I have a lot of eroding cut slopes to model on my layout and being in northern MN I wont be able to look for a local source until maybe April.

This is the stuff I'm looking at:
