Scenery and structures

coal mine

I am thinking about scratch building some of the structures seen above ground at a coal mine in HO scale. I have found hundreds of great photos and am wondering if scratch builders build from photos, actual plans, or just from their imagination. If built from photos how do you determine dimensions? Are there any web sites where I can get dimensional drawings? thanks for any input.

Envirotex measurement formula

Hey Folks,

It's been a long time since I tried to figure out the volume of an area, so I wanted to check the forum to make sure I have this right.

I am going to make a pour of envirotex on my river bed, so I need to know the square inches and I know I want it to be 1/8 of an inch deep.

The pour area is 6"x16" So thats 96 square inches then multiply that times .125 and that gives me 12oz of mixed resin.

Is that correct? I don't want to mess up lol.

Backdrop help

What do you guys recommend as the best way to get a nice layout backdrop for an artistically-challenged modeler who can't draw a straight line with a ruler?

I've noticed Backdrop Warehouse is an MRH sponsor. Are they my best option for a non-artist, or do you guys recommend something else?

Glueing clear window

I am replacing all the windows of my Galloping Goose. The simply do not look good to me. So I cut up some clear film I keep from various sources.  My question is what are the suggested glues to hold this without fogging or damaging the  film.  The windows will be flush to frame and not mounted from behind. I've cut all the wiindows with precision.

wooden trestle in n scale

I would like to build a wooden trestle for my new N scale layout but I am not sure what size wood I should use for all the timbers. I will be usin F units and small steam locos on it with very short trains of six or eight cars.

Also does anyone have any pics of some different ones for some inspiration?? There is no particular prototype that I'm following other than I have mostly PRR engines.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Wire support of landscape

This is kinda' a blast from the past, but I thought that it might be helpful to those that are thinking about constructing scenery that is vertical and needs support.  I thought about many options to support the landscape before I happend to notice a 15' section of wire fence just sitting in my back yard not being used.

Bought a craftsman structure kit? Why or why not?

Okay, we have the other thread on what is a craftsman structure kit - now let me take a different tact in this thread.

Have you ever BOUGHT a craftsman structure kit? Who did you buy it from and why?

Would you buy a craftsman structure kit from any of our sponsors? We have these sponsors who sell "craftsman structure kits" in one form or another:

BBQ or Outdoor Fireplace

Hello, am modeling a scenic overlook area set up with a picnic area. I have the picnic tables, but want to buy 2-4 BBQ grill or outdoor fireplace items. Was hoping for the brick version. Can find sets with people, tables and such, but I ONLY need the actual grill/fireplace items. Any one out there know were I can buy just these items? Website? Thanks, oh, and please respond off net to rlandr0718@att.net.

Sorry, forgot to mention, this is HO scale..
