Wet water using soap. which method to use isopropyl alcohol?

Ok, from what I've read, 2 drops of liquid soap to 1 cup of water makes wet water. dish or laundry soap?

I've read online that some people use isopropyl alcohol mixed with water as well to help with the absorption of glue. what is the mixture ratio for that? 50% of each?

This will be used for landscaping and ballasting.

What works best?

which foam to use? what works best for building layouts?

Ok, just asked a few questions on hot glue guns and now have questions on which foam to use to build my layout. I plan on using the blue 1/2"  2 layers thick as a base and want to know what foam to build the rest of the layout with. I have the woodland scenics foam cutter to sculpt it but I need to know which foam to get.

Home depot sells a product called handipac which looks like it might work well and a product called PlastiSpan HD.

Has anyone used these products and will they emit toxic fumes when I cut them with the hot wire technique?

N Scale roads and pavement

What is anyone here using to make good looking pavement for N scale?? I have a back road and some city streets to make and I'm not sure what might look right. I though about just flat black paint but I dont know.

Low road clearance rail bridge. All steel trestle in urban setting?

I have a spur leading into the side of a brick structure on the first floor which leaves very little clearance for road vehicles delivering to the docks directly below it.

So far I've been messing with, I think, Atlas N scale girders to sit above tie height. I know in country New South Wales they used timber trestles through some towns.
I'm modelling around N/E US in an urban area. Does anyone know of a steel trestle? Just like the timber ones of old, but all steel in a industrial complex?

Jointing sand for ballast [updated]

Earlier I had posed the question wether or not Stone dust or Jointing sand would be usable for ballast, and after some great responses I decided to get some and try it. I ended up getting a 20kg bag of jointing sand (the stone dust appears to coarse for HO). So I get home, grab a bucket, open the bag and...

It's all CLUMPED!!! I will have to dry it out before i can use it, Any recommendations for drying?

woodland scenics low temp glue gun

Looking at one of these to use. I have a regular glue gun that I us for various things, but how well do these ones work? Can I use their glue sticks in my regular glue gun? It says on their website that the gun heats to 230 degrees. is this really a difference? Anyone use this product and are you happy with it?

Just wondering.

Thanks.

Tar paper roof

Hi All

I'm finishing construction of a scratch built tipple, and want to put a tar paper roof on it. Its HO scale, I'm not sure what to do now to make a decent looking tar paper roof. Any thoughts?

Diamond Scale TT... Thoughts....

Yesterday, my wife and I went shopping at the consignment table at the LHS in town. After we found a couple of cars for the kids, I did some looking for my wishlist. We were about done, when I noticed a large whitish box under the table.

I pulled it out and discovered it is a Diamond Scale 130' (if i remember correctly) TT. I asked the guys about it, and apparently the owner has only ever opened it once, looked at it and decided it was too much effort to assemble. He's selling it for about half price.
