Track and electrical/DCC

DCC on an analog layout.

My layout is DC cab control. I see lots of new locomotives labeled DCC ready, and some that apparently have DCC controllers but can run on regular DC, Do these suffer in terms of throttle response on regular DC in comparison to older DC locomotives?

common pulse servo driver

i wonder if controlling servos couldn't be done with two pulse generators and an SPDT switch for each servo connecting the servo to one of the two generators.    An NE556 dual timer could be used to generate a 1ms and a 2ms  pulses distributed throughout the layout (may need repeaters)

i'm assuming all servos could be driven to the same positions, like tortoise machines.

Online dis-information about DCC...

Lots of false information online about DCC ...
I have recently installed an ESU V4 Micro in my HOn3 C-25 locomotive and programmed it in the Lokprogrammer.
Everything worked well there.
Then when I tested it on the track yesterday, the light flashed ... and had a popping sound!?!
Also, the speed curve was completely out of whack, fast-slow-fast ????

My SMA30 WiFi throttle software V1.0 PDF

I have attached a PDF file of my modified software for Geoff Bunza's SMA30 WiFi Throttle. I am calling this V1.0 for my PC&N Ry.

I have added a heartbeat feature to keep JMRI from disconnecting the throttle due to inactivity. Also, auto IP configuration for my two WiFI networks, Optional send track power on command to JMRI on power up.

I added a power off/dispatch throttle option that is activated by having the direction switch in Neutral and setting the speed step to 60 or greater.

Hope this may be of use to someone.

Soldering the LED leads to the small connector board on a Decoder Buddy

I’ve posted the routing of LED leads in the “Whats On Your Workbench?” as snipits.  This is slightly more involved so I’ll post it separately.

The first step was to solder a lead to the positive side of the small connector board.  Just like the decoder the hot wire goes to all the LEDs.

Can I power an N scale Just Plug vehicle with the MRC Light Genie without adding a resistor?

I have a few N scale vehicles similar to this:

Can I power them directly using an MRC Light Genie without adding a resistor to the LED in the car?

Wiring Between Individual Units, sound & DCC installations, primarily steam engines

Pros and cons of wiring up DCC & sound installation in primarily HO steam locomotives?

Are there good reasons that one might elect NOT to put dis-connectable plugs in the wiring of steam engines with their tenders. In some cases it seems like just another area to cause connection problems down the road? And if one was concerned about separating the two at a later date (for selling/shipping/etc) couldn't they just get a longer box?

Removing capacitor from Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0

I have three relatively recent HO Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0s.  In each I removed the factory decoder and put in a TCS WOWSound decoder and speaker.

Two of the three run fabulously well.  The third is very jerky, particularly at slow speeds.  I encountered the gentleman from TCS at a recent meet and he suggested the problem could be a capacitor across the motor terminals.
