JL&T Railroad Blog - Scratch building a crossing...

Hi All,

Well after trying to get a standard 90 degree crossing to work for a siding that I want to install on the L&T, I have decided to build my own.

Finger Lakes RR Switching Layout

I have been working on this small (64"x18") switching layout since July. I am moving slowly as everything seems new to me and it is taking time. My other two blog posts show the beginning of the project and some first attempts at things.

This link is to my first post that shows building the frame and adding the foam base.

Using JMRI Operations - A worked example - Part 3

This is part 3 in a multi-part series documenting my progress in using the Operations functionality of JRMI.

Part 1 is available here.

Part 2 is available here.

Naming my railroad and creating a herald

Naming my railroad and creating a herald. How does one go about naming a fictitious railroad? I guess since I'm at the point of building bench work its time to start thinking about a names. This narrow gauge  railroad started at a Wharf town and ends up high in the mountains. I'm thinking West coast.

I suppose I shall upload a track plan or maybe even create a "Map" of the area at which point I can start naming towns. I wouldn't mind getting input from the MRH community.

This is my first layout video so i thought i would share it here.

CSX coal drag led by Dash 8 7677 and 2 SD 40-2s lug a coal drag up the 2.85 percent grade over Kelly creek on the way to Sandcutt West Virginia.

Locomotive projects and scratchbuilding.

Recently i stumbled across some nice pictures of some high capacity wood chip hoppers and couldnt help myself so i decided to scratchbuild a pair. I followed 2 different designs for each and one of the cars was made following a MR article on sp woodchip hoppers but the design for the car was the same.

Here are the prototype cars

Bridging the gap

I have completed a couple of bridges to span the gaps in the roadbed and this proved to be quite an enjoyable process. the first is a combination through truss and deck girder bridge. The truss is simply a walthers kit and as in the past i have found this kit to be a joy to assemble. The deck girder section is just some micro engineering girders. There is still a bent to be fitted on the last girder joint.

First diorama complete on the UNPR

After eight months on my newbie layout a feeling of achievement in finally completing one small section.  The pictures below show my sawmill on a spur track. The building has lights, the water wheel turns and the saw blade in the mill operates.  The ridge on the left needs a few more trees but the mill and siding are complete.  Yeehasmiley

Trial and error

As I get farther along with my modular project, I get a bit overwhelmed as to how much I need to learn and experience.  Since I switched to N scale several years ago, even though I got trackwork completed on a layout, I haven't done any scenery or structure building.  All my (limited) experience in those area were from my earliest days doing HO.  Time to flex the mental muscles and get my head thinking smaller!
