This is a view of the base for the layout. I used a piece of scrap 1/2" plywood that was 64"x18". That determined the size of the layout. I added 1x2 on edge to suport it.
hi Ken, thanks for the link. I was looking at that last night, but didn't see the tools. I was on the iPad and they didn't come up. Now that I am home and on the PC things are available. I will sooner or later get it together and even get the comments on the photos to match up.
Now after a lot of summer travel and wonderful weekends in the Thousand Islands area of Upper and Central New York, I am really making some progress on the layout. I have reclaimed Peco switches and Atlas flex track from a very old layout that hasn't seen the light of day in a lot of years. I was pleasantly surprised how well all the track survied and performs.

I added 1" insulation board over the plywood for the sub-road base. Umm...that is not a case of gin (nuts!) just heavy books.
