Middle school model RR: can lid scrap loads
Bill Brillinger’s post illustrating his list-driven car card system reminded me that one of my key objectives for the model railroad we’re building in my math classroom is to provide a visceral understanding of the circumstances that generate traffic on a transportation system.
One example is a problem that I pose for calculating car orders for empty gondolas to carry away scrap metal as a function of how many cars of sheet metal coils are delivered to a tin can fabricating facility.

IAIS's West End - The draw of the caboose
Growing up in the 1970s, I've long had a fondness for cabooses, especially the MP short bay window design. In fact, the lack of cabooses on my portion of the IAIS has been the only major regret I've had about my choice of prototypes. It's been so bad that I've often thought about backdating the layout to RI times, or even starting over with a different 1970s prototype, in order to allow caboose ops.
Here We Go Again!
As I'm waiting for my cordless drill battery to recharge, I thought it would be a great time to take a break, snap some pictures, and bring you up to date on what's new around here.
No Idea What I Have
So I inherited this train set from a friend and a lot of it looks really old and some even with original boxes that look like they're from the 70's or earlier. I laid it all out and uploaded a video of it here. Can anyone tell me if this is something wirth anything or just old junk, etc?; http://youtu.be/fi0kTYQPwsw
New layout.
Just wanted to share a few early pic's of a small section of my new HO layout. This hopefully will end up as the water front section but I still have a long way to go. The final layout size will be 14'x28'. Hope you enjoy the pic's.
