Trucks and Shorts

I have recently been converting all my rolling stock to metal wheels. However, I've run into a problem with older cars that are Varney or early Blue Box in that the truck frames are all metal with the obligatory "pain-in-the-butt" little bolster springs. These trucks obviously cause shorts on my DCC system conducting the current from one side to the other.

Early streamliners - McKeen motor cars & trailers and other doodlebugs

I've started with two McKeen sets in 1/29-scale (if the results  will be satisfying, maybe a preliminary practice for a model in 1.6" -scale).

First set will be a 70' McKeen motor coach car with knife-shaped nose; it will receive a 31' baggage trailer. I had SP's #45 with it's trailer in mind first, but made the mistake with the knife-nose, which wasn't Harriman design - so I'll look for fitting prototype...maybe UP's #25, which came from ATSF or V&T's #22 w/o the trailer.

RAPIDO VIA CANADA F40PH-2D

I received a great Christmas present this year.  Rapido's True North Locomotives VIA CANADA F40PH-2D.  Took it out of the box and ran it through its features.  It was absolutely awesome.  This locomotive is prototypically correct and has amazing detail.  I have been waiting for this model for years.  Enjoy.  An AMTRAK version is in production from what I have heard.

Height Options on a second deck....

Hi and Happy New Year ( almost )
I am at a key juncture in the new layout construction.
The height of the upper deck.
Right now top of track level is 42" main deck....62" upper
I am debating lowering the upper deck to 60". basically lowering it 2".
This would give me 14.5" of lower deck clearance for scenery and such.
While it seems like a small change ( depending on your height and reach) it seems to perhaps look better from an operating stand point.

A few things come together in a scene.

From my last post of trying a few things. I completed the Wood Loads & placed them on the 3 flat cars I have for them, did not quite fit right so I had some left over Wood Shop machinery so put them in the middle to take up the space. Replanted the Tulips next to the call box, looks, not bad.

Playing with Sculptamold today!

This is the second scene on my layout next to the soybean complex(see previous blog entry's).  This area will have a MOPAC depot, (Used for MOW storage), and general store. Two wood kits structures that have been completed.

Pokey Progress - Dec '14

Time for a construction update on the new layout I'm building. Here are some pictures and thoughts along the way of what's gone on this past month. I'll post them in the initial entries to this blog. Hope you enjoy the tour! I look forward to reading your replies!
