Craftsman Kit
The wood craftsman caboose kit is coming along and, fortunately, I learned a few things before I got started:
1. Read the directions. That's what they're there for.
Playing with PhotoShop
One of my side interests is railway slides. I have amassed quite a few over the years, and an offshoot of this is trying to find locations that were shot in the past and see how they look now. An ongoing "project" is finding locations in the Vancouver area related to the historic BC Electric streetcar and interurban services that were shut down in 1958.
ATSF BK Ice Deck Update
Finally finished the model except for painting. Hopefully will be able to get that done today. The paper template is of the icing facility area on the LaMesa Model RR Club layout. I need to cut out the layout substrate and then the deck will be the correct height above the rails. Those are 40 and 50' SFRD reefers in the photos.
Weekend Project - Installing Sound Decoder into an N-Scale Kato F7A
Just finished installing a Digitrax SDN144K0a into an N-scale Kato F7A. The engine frame was modified by Aztec Mfg so it has a machined slot in the rear to hold a round 16mm speaker from Tony's Train Exchange. The decoder comes with front and rear LEDs, a capacitor, and a 13mm speaker. Here are some pictures of the F7 disassembled and the machined opening for the speaker:
Utopia
My layout benchwork, which consists of a pair of 78.5 x 11.5 bi-fold doors topped with foam, has been up for most of the year. During that time I've done nothing to it other than add a backdrop and fascia.
IAIS's West End - UP power on IAIS
I've been on a UP locomotive building kick lately and thought I'd share the results. Many of the models in this post had previously been in service on the layout, but in untouched factory paint with no weathering. A big part of this push was to renumber, redetail, and weather them to match units that operated on the IAIS during May 2005.
