The Model Railroad Hobbyist Machine Shop

I recently made a post over on my FM H-16-44 DCC Conversion thread about using a milling machine to shave a locomotive frame a bit to create more room for a decoder.  This led to some questions about endmills, use of drill presses for light milling, and other tools like strip sanders, Dremel (and similar) rotary tools, safety around machine tools, etc.  Later I made a post about small milling machines based on Sieg models, and there was some interest in the list of compatible machines posted.

H16-44 from Rapido

Has anyone heard about the status of the new H-16-44 model from Rapido? I am wondering if it will be produced or not. I reserved 8 of them at my dealer’s a while back.

A Simple DCC Engine

I am in the planning stage of a shelf switching layout that our grandson ( 5 years old at this point) and I can spend time operating.  I will be using an NCE Power Cab (given to me by a friend who updated his home layout). I am looking for suggestions for a 4-axle early generation locomotive (GP-7/GP9 type that is DCC with sound.  I am looking for one without too many options.

Since this will be a switching layout low speed performance is desired while high speed is not necessary.

Kato parts

Are parts available for Kato HO diesel engines? Yesterday I received in the mail a KATO HO C44-9W CSX Dash 9 that had numerous broken sections of its handrails,...plastic ones.

I recall that there seems to be very limited (or virtually) no replacement/spare parts for our model trains these days? The importers just bring in the engines as a whole, ....but no spare parts??

Anyone suggest a good repair method for these plastic hand rails.

A MYRIAD OF VARIATIONS:

Athearn sd60m triclops

Bought a nice new Sd60m triclops.

Very nice, but 2 bearing caps missing.

Athearn are currently putting out repair kits which fix the problem, but will only mail them to USA and Canada.

I live in the UK, and Athearn refuse to send me a kit.

Can anybody in the USA please help?

Happy to cover costs, expenses etc. Anybody?

DCC in n-scale Bachmann GP40

See the source image

Trying to decide best way to convert this Bachmann N Scale EMD GP40 to DCC.

See from this TCS article there is some tedious and risky effort involved. Especially with cutting traces on the factory board. https://tcsdcc.com/installation/n-scale/2093
