Are parts available for Kato HO diesel engines? Yesterday I received in the mail a KATO HO C44-9W CSX Dash 9 that had numerous broken sections of its handrails,...plastic ones.

I recall that there seems to be very limited (or virtually) no replacement/spare parts for our model trains these days? The importers just bring in the engines as a whole, ....but no spare parts??

Anyone suggest a good repair method for these plastic hand rails.

Kato

Just looked at Kato USA's website, for $6.00 you could have a brand new set of handrails. Wow, that was easy!

Repairing Engineering Plastics

Delrin and other engineering plastics are great for modellers.. They're tough and flexible...  but also impervious to most all solvent glues, so when they DO break they're almost impossible to repair.

There are some adhesives, though, meant specifically for this kind of plastic. Cypox is one.  From the FAQ on their web site:

Does Cypox work on "slippery" plastic?

Yes.  This system has been developed for use on all types of plastics.  It is the only viable solution (besides a plastic welder) for use on materials such as UHMW, Delrin®, Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Nylon, Teflon®, ABS.  You will find these high density plastics in the form of children’s toys, car dashboards and bumpers, appliances, tools, electronics, etc.  Success with bonding these plastics is achieved with using our Plastic Primer 302 to prepare the surface before applying the Bonder and Activator.

It's a multi step process, but it's the only kind of solution for repairing this kind of material. There are several brands, and you might be able to do better on pricing (this stuff isn't cheap) but when the parts are made from unobtainium, it's the only game in town.

That was interesting,...never thought to try it. I will have to give it a try.

BTW, did you notice the number of listings that are "Sold Out"
