Did U.S. Broad Gauge RRs (6') use larger (wider) motive power

IAIS's West End - God loves a culvert

There's a long-running quote among railroad engineering departments:

"The basic rules of bridge building are:

  1. Never build a bridge when a trestle will do,
  2. Never build a trestle when a fill will do, and
  3. God loves a culvert."

Unfortunately, even a culvert can't be accurately modeled when you don't even know it's there...which gives you a clue as to the quandary that I'm now attempting to address.

C&O RSD5 - Long or Short hood Forward?

Dear C&O fans,

Hopefully a quick one, which significant hours online searching has not yet definitively answered....

For the C&O 905X series Alco RSD5,
and the C&O EMD GP9,

Did C&O consider the Short or the Long hood to be the Front?

Metra orders rebuilt SD70MACs

This news story popped up on my Google "Discover" news feed on my phone today:

https://www.railwaygazette.com/news/traction-rolling-stock/single-view/view/metra-orders-rebuilt-freight-locomotives.html

Sounds pretty interesting. Could be some good modeling opportunites for those who model modern passenger ops!

Control Points (CP) - how are they determined and placed?

I'd like to know how does one decide when/where to locate Control Points (CP) on their railroad.

From my limited understanding a CP  would usually be placed at some junction/branch-off where a main would diverge, but diverge into what: a siding, an interchange, a yard, something else, any of those?

DPU's on the Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh Line

I am sure this is old news,  Norfolk Southern is now using DPUs on the Pittsburgh line.

Makes you wonder how much longer the extremely active helper service based out of Cresson, PA will be around???

Three of Four VIA Rail F40PH-2 Engines Finished

I have finished custom building the third of four N Scale Kato F40PH engines to VIA Rail colours.

This engine is in the later Large Flag scheme.

How would a derailment like this be cleaned up?

Train derailed onto the team track.

Only access to train would be on the flat car side.

Happened in Stonehammer:
