Prototype Modeling - An Exercise in Futility?

The more you learn about your prototype, the more difficult it becomes to model it accurately, and - eventually - it becomes impossible. So do you give up trying, even though you know you're doomed to ultimate failure? Do you still stretch to reach, even if you know you can never quite grasp?

WIP Update #2 -VIA Rail F40PH-2 in N Scale

With yesterdays ice storm I was able to install the decoder and gloss coat the shell of the VIA Rail F40PH-2 in N Scale, in the early small Canadian Flag scheme.

I airbrushed several very light coats of Humbrol Clear Gloss Varnish on the Kato shell in preparation for applying decals.

Tichy 50 Ton Flat Car ProtoTypes

I'm just finishing off a bulk pack of tichy 40' 50 ton flat car kits that will be heading to the paint shop in coming weeks.

I planned to decal these for the major western prototypes such as SP&S, SP, GN and the like but having trouble  finding prototype images of the cars.

Can anyone out there help provide some accurate prototype photos of 50 ton flatcars that the tichy kits may reflect closely?

Or even if your able to confirm what roads i should be looking at....

WIP Update #1 -VIA Rail F40PH-2 in N Scale

Update on my Work-In-Progress, VIA Rail F40PH-2 in N Scale, in the early small Canadian Flag scheme.

Today I was able to complete several stages including masking and airbrushing the black areas of the roof, nose and bottom of the Kato shell.

Fun with view blocks and background photos

For the last week i have been working on a "disguise" for one of two entrance into my staging area. One is a highway overpass which is still developing. The other turned out to be with help from a Walthers Pellet Transfer a scratbuilt plastics plant. After constructing these I also added backgound phots of trees/ foilage and a city scene from the actual town I model.

Attached are a few photos illustrating my progress.

Enjoy,

Barry

What railroads were present in upper michigan 1970s.

Hello, I'm a new member and I'm starting my 1st layout. I'm modeling the upper peninsula of michigan in the 1970s,in Ho, I have learned that the main railroads I need to focus on for this era are
C&NW
Milwaukee Road
SOO Line
LS&I(Lake Superior & Ishpeming)
My question is,what other railroads may have frequented the upper peninsula, or even may have just passed thru in the 70s.id like to get a little more variety just for my main line loop. Thank you for your time.
