Builder's photo paint?

I know that the British loco builders would commonly paint new locomotives in "works gray," a grayscale version of the eventual paint scheme, because it would show up better in black & white photos.  Does anyone know whether the practice was common in the US as well?

Meter gauge SD40-2 - prototype

I saw this on another forum.  It would take some work, but man would this make a cool model!

Putt'em on the Ground

When I first got back into this hobby I set Google Alerts for the real railroads like BNSF, CSX, etc. After a couple years of looking at these I have come to a conclusion. Real railroads, in total, have a lot of derailments. It seems there isn't a day goes by that some railroad doesn't have an incident somewhere. I know they have a lot of track and trains in operation. But gee whiz, almost daily incidents. Some of the bigger wrecks cost millions of dollars to clean up. The COOs must consume aspirin by the bucket load.

collision avoidance?

I came across an interesting image in a NS video about signals & operations. It looks like it is basically a turnout, but instead of turning onto a siding, you would turn onto empty space!  I'm guessing this must be interlocked into the mainline up ahead so that any oncoming traffic would be routed to a derailment rather than a head-on collision. Can anyone confirm this? Might be an interesting thing to model too!

Couplers

Went to Railfest in North Platte this past weekend.  UP had all of their heritage locomotives on display at their diesel repair shop.  Most of these locos are SD70's.  The Katy was my favorite.  I noticed that mounted at the back of each loco were two spare coupler knuckles.  They don't look like an afterthought.  The brackets are designed into the units.

Can someone tell me if these knuckles fail that often?  Also, what happens when they do?

Thanks!

Advice on painting rock castings

Hi guys,

I have had a go at coloring my rock cliff face with the Woodland Scenics pigments. My base color is slate grey.

I think it came out ok but for the very evident "white" between the rock castings.

I did not use Hydrocal as it is just too expensive for me . I used the Plaster of Paris rather as an alternative.I joined the castings with the same, unaware that I was going to have this unrealistic appearance .

New York Central Bay City Branch or Rock Island Pratt sub

I figure if I start a blog and work through some of my thoughts, I might get started on this layout quicker.  I am rebuilding a room for my layout and have been thinking about what prototype I would most like to model (HO scale  is most likely).  I grew up near the NYC Bay City, Michigan branch, rode my first train on it, and have a lot of fond memories of the area, so it would be fun to model.  I now live on the UP ex RI Pratt sub, it would also be fun to model, and easy to research, it is right out the window.  I am wondering which one would be more interesting
