Cars restricted from interchange

I'm not having much luck finding information on stenciling for cars that are restricted from interchange. I recall something like an R or "not leaving the home road" stenciling on the car sides, usually near the numbers.

Does anyone have any good examples of this lettering? Thanks.

Colorado Front Range Railroad March Update

Here is the March up date and I am looking for any photos of Martin Drake Coal Plant in Colorado Springs 1960 or earlier. I can see all kinds of photos today or in the last 20 years. But I can tell from the maps i have from 1958 that the plant was much smaller. From Google Earth i can see two of the old brick building. So if any one can help with photos or a web site that I may have missed please let me know.

Happy Spring! (A trip to the MECR)

Here is a video of a video I took yesterday of Mass Central 1751 heading back from the mill in south barre. As you can see, the weather was really looking fresh and thawed, and the sun was shining, and the sky was blue! :D I think this road would make a great model railway. It is only about 20-30 miles, owns four locos, and train lengths never exceed 20 cars! Usually, less then ten, i think. Note there us an abandoned boxcar a couple yards beyond the pie of ties. I would love to check it out someday, but there is a NO TRESPASSING sign, and the area is fairly populated.

California Northern pipe trains

Hi all.

Does anyone know where I can find pictures and information about the pipe trains the California Northern railroad used to run? I'd like to model it, but pics and info are very hard to find.

Thanks,

IAIS 250 sounds off

My model of Iowa Interstate’s SW1200 250 just got a sound upgrade. It has a Loksound Select decoder and I had been using ESU’s 16 cylinder 567 prime mover sound. But ESU recently released a 12 cylinder 567 which is a perfect fit for the engine.

The sound is incredible. Since the 250 is my layout’s primary locomotive, having the correct prototypical sound is very important. The 12 cylinders have a nice throaty chant that ESU captured well.

If interested, you can hear the sound at:

Here is a MOW train you could model

Driving from Boise to Lewiston I saw this neat little work train on the Idaho Northern Pacific Thunder Mountain line. They were using one of their newly acquired GP9 for their sister railroad the Nebraska Central. The other two cars were a Side dump car similar to the Difco car from Walthers and short Union Pacific flat car similar to the offering by Exactrail. The excavator could easily be modeled by using one of the offerings from Norscot.

Caboose Servicing Facilities

I'm trying to figure out why you need to get to the top of a caboose for servicing? I guess I can see possibly cleaning the windows.

Several manufacturers have structures like this for sale:

I get the lower oil tank or even a coaling area for older cars. Even water fills were lower.

Although I still have a few details I would like to add, the Marion 4160 is painted and assembled, ready for me to start building a diorama.
