Modeling general discussion

Attention Canadian Modelers

Attention Canadian Modelers... The Canadian Tire flyer in my part of the country (Woodstock, NB) is advertising digital calipers at $15. If you've never used calipers in your modeling they are wonderful measuring tools. I believe these measure in decimal inches and millimeters. I'm going to get a set as a backup.

Comparing to prototype

I had this Caboose numbered, but after looking at the prototype, I noticed the numbers are a tad too large on the model. These were the only numbers I could find made by Microscale for CN modern cabooses. I've come to the point in hobbying that I try to avoid looking at prototypes so not to get disappointed. Got to get back to the joy of running a train and not be obsessed with details.

Weekly Photo Fun - August 7th to August 13th, 2015

Superb work everyone last week!  Time to start of this week's photo thread!

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Rod's Model Railroad Index - issues....returning ads and NOT links to content.

** Updated - I didn't realize that Rod had passed away.  May he rest in peace.

I was trying to use Rod's index and followed the link on the MRH site and here's the page where it landed:

This page looked different than what I've seen in the past.  I typed "MRH Turnouts" on the search line:

Pledge Floor stuff (was Future)

So I bought some Pledge floor care stuff, what used to be called Future. I am planning to use it as suggested with water slide decals to ensure a good bond with the surface and to eliminate silvering. I am also interested to use it as a general gloss coat for models. I am wondering if it can be airbrushed without thinning and if it needs to be thinned what would I thin it with. It looks pretty watery in the bottle. BTW the bottle is blue and white here in Canada. $8.77 at my local WalMart.

Santa Maria Valley RR

Here's a video and some pictures of the two freelance SMVRR steam locomotives I've lined up for use into Guadalupe yard on my proposed next layout (to be built when I eventually move house). Guadalupe is where the SMVRR interchanged with the Southern Pacific, and still does today with UP.

Why are hobby products imported from Europe rising in price if the Euro is down?

This is not a screed.

it is a genuine query that I hope someone from the hobby industry can answer.

We spent two weeks in Paris in June.  It was delightfully inexpensive.

i am in the market for and have been buying quality HO vehicles.  I assumed that at some point, prices would reflect the strong dollar.  It hasn't happened yet.

What are the market forces at work here?

Snow plow

It's too early, at least in this hemisphere, to think of that four-letter word, but a friend sent me this link that was fun to see:

Rules for Model RR clubs

Does your Model RR Club have at set of written rules? What subjects are codified? What are the penalties for rule infractions?

Example from Central Railway Model & Historical Association:

IF YOU PICK UP A LOCOMOTIVE AND MOVE IT OR A PIECE OF ROLLING STOCK YOU WILL RECEIVE A WARNING. IF IT HAPPENS A SECOND TIME YOU WILL BE SUSPENDED FROM OPERATING TRAINS FOR 90 DAYS.
