NMRA 2016

I know it is a long ways away but just wanted to know how many people here are planning on going. My grandparents already said they would take me but the question is if my parents will let me. I am hoping if there is still space maybe even exhibit the club layout and do some advertising for Augusta Track. Hope to be there and see some of you,

well we won't have a layout but I am for sure going. I will be there from late Thursday through Mid-Saturday and hope to run into a few of you at the show.

Defining a mastery program for the 21st Century

Okay, there's been a lot of theoretical discussion about what's wrong with the current Master Model Railroader program of the NMRA.

Let's get out of theoretical space and start defining how YOU would design a mastery of model railroading program for the 21st century.

On the nature of certifications for mastery

This thread is not intended as a parallel thread to the existing one for arguing over the NMRA MMR requirements.  I would respectfully ask that we try not to go in that direction in this thread, because it is a different aspect that I wish to discuss here.

The train show at The Villages

Today I went to the train show at The Villages.  I was in the market for a couple of sound decoders and I knew that MRH sponsor Yankee Dabbler was going to be there.  They gave me a great deal on the decoders and some #148 Kadee couplers.  I got one of their guys to take a picture - notice my MRH t-shirt!  I had a great time and got some good stuff (also a L&N boxcar kit).

Our latest video - Fun with Dioramas in Model Railroading

You can surely see what Gary Christensen and Jurg have accomplished right here in the forums.

A look into building dioramas!
I thought some might enjoy this look into building model railroad dioramas.
In this video we take a look at model railroad dioramas which can be an interesting and exciting way to enjoy modeling railroading in a very small space.

Dioramas are especially well suited to those that do not have the space, time or money to devote to a dream layout.

Anyone know what the status of the Scotty Mason Show is?

There hasn't been very many updates, none very recently, and I'm wondering what may have happened?

Weekly photo fun. February 5th - 12th, 2016

I have not posted in a while, so here is my contributions for this week.  Always excellent work here as this is my favorite thread.

Thanks,

Tim

SQUARES

The thread on Givens and Druthers got me to wonder about Squares.

The first reference in Model Railroader is in the article 'Doodling By The Squares" by John Armstrong in November 1980

Square is described in - Track Planning For Realistic Operation, Second Edition 1979.  I don't know if it was  in the First Edition 1963 and reprinted a number of times through 1976.

S+R+2C

S  Square, R Minimum Radius,  C Track center spacing

Modeling Amtrak - Thoughts?

Driving through St. Louis the other day, my 7 year old son caught sight of an Amtrack train crossing the Mississippi River.  (I might have pointed it out to him.)  Since then he has asked numerous times if we can get an Amtrak train to run on the (my) layout.  I am attempting to model the Midwest in the 1950's.  I have never really followed Amtrak much and don't know much about the changes in phases over the years.

Audible Electrical Short Warning

Anyone know of an off-the-shelf device that would give an audible signal when there is a short in the track power?  I have circuit breakers that trip to protect the power supply but sometimes the first hint I have of a problem is the overheating of the ICs on the board.  At one of my op sessions an engine got derailed and before I realized the problem the circuit breaker was cooked.

I use Rail Lynx and the track voltage is regulated at a constant 12.5 DC.
