Modeling general discussion

Who will be the first?

To build a narrow gauge crossing a standard gauge railroad like this? I think it would make for an interesting model.

Drilling through small brass parts

I've been drilling through some small brass parts recently (Precision Scale) and wondered about how to make sure you are drilling straight. Seems like a simple task maybe with a drill press.

Last night I was drilling 1/16" hole through 4-5/16" brass pipe fittings.(to stick pipe through).

Homebuilt Model Making Fixtures

Hi All,

I`ve noticed a few posts here on these fine forums of different model making tools and fixtures that others have made, so I thought I would start a thread for people here to show off their model making fixtures and tools.........maybe we can all learn a thing or two in the process.

Congratulations Luke Towan

Congratulations Luke on being named "MRH Staff Pick Award Winner for March". I really enjoy your "How To" videos on YouTube, informative and fun to watch as well.

A Painting Handle

I have just started to think about getting ready to consider the possibility of weathering my mountains of rolling stock, maybe! Who says I procrastinate!

Anyway, as part of this I have been getting supplies ready for the big day when I might just weather something. I had purchased a painting handle that will hold a boxcar body. Like this:-

Penn Central Video

Nice video of PC in the early years. Does a better job than most of getting more than just locomotives and cabeese.

Just do it!

I have heard many times that the younger you are, the more apt you are to quickly be able to understand a new technology. This is because the young learn things experientially. They learn by doing. Hand a child a tablet and they will tap and swipe until they get the thing doing what they want. As older folks are hesitant, not wanting to "break" anything. We look for lists of instructions so we don't go wrong.

design software for other than railroads?

So I spent the time to learn Xtrackcad. Previously I was trying to learn Scarm but was not getting very far. I found Xtrackcad to be easier. At least for me anyway.

A major benefit I have found is it is very easy to use to design things other than the railroad. I designed my paint booth with it. I recently used it to draw up a sink cabinet for the basement and last night drew up plans for my paint drawers. I have built a lot of garage worthy cabinets and drawers, and usually had the plan just in my head and sometimes it led to things not working out so well.

Weekly Photo Fun - March 4th to March 10th, 2016

Great work everyone last week!  Time to start of this week's photo thread!

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Andrew
