Modeling general discussion

Help from good friends…

One neat aspect of this hobby is that there are a lot of modelers who share their time and expertise to help other modelers build layouts. This is the case with a layout currently under construction for Mike Moore. Mike was confined to a wheelchair shortly after moving into a new home. Obviously, this puts a damper on his ability to build a layout, so to help with the work his friends, Clark Propst, Bob Gretillat, and Bob Drenth stepped in to start construction.

Guess what I just found....

You'll all say I'm slow.  I don't mind.  I get there after a while....

Ken Patterson has a new thing.  A PODcast each week on YouTube called "What's Neat This Week."  I'm just starting to catch up to current.  There must be 8 or 10 sessions now.  It's a good general thought session with some very good people entering into discussions and good discussions.  I'm going to be looking forward to the next one shortly when I come up even with the series.

Cary Metal F3 disaster

Yesterday a friend was running on his layout and before anyone could catch it, his Cary metal body F3 B unit took a tumble to the floor. I had custom painted this for him. The damage consists of a mushed top corner that can be disguised with paint. However, two of the stirrup steps broke off.

Can anyone suggest a method of reattaching these? I don't trust CA and thought of epoxy but there is so little surface area to glue to. Looking for any tips on how we might get steps back on this old girl.

Has Anyone Tried Vallejo Gloss and Matte Varnish?

Has anyone (Joe???) tried the Vallejo gloss and matte varnishes? Do they airbrush as easily as the Model Air colors? Are thinning ratios similar to the colors? Does the gloss give a good surface to apply decals?

I've been testing the Model Air and Game Air colors using the tips from Joe's Acrylic Paint Guide and I'm impressed with the finish I've been getting. Now it's time to take the next step with the clear overcoats.

Switch throws; finally

I do not know how far switch throws should be from the turnout. Can someone help me? I model the mid fifties, CNR branch line.

Curved Roof construction/laser cutting?

Anyone have any leads for a fellow hobbyist who would be willing to do a small styrene laser cutting? I can do the CAD designs, but I dont have a laser to cut the styrene.

Here's my project. I need to make about 30 curved roof ribs for my snow dozers roof. I was thinking about cutting them out of .030 to .060" thick styrene and than gluing the bottom and top sheets over the ribs.

For Joe and all. A twist on the HP Acrylic Solvent

I'd like to offer Joe an olive branch with my thanks for making all this possible.

Katy's First Kit

My daughter Katy was given an old AHM Fire Station kit and today we started to assemble it. Katy had assembled an Athearn BB kit but never a structure kit so it was a learning experience.

She learnt about sprues, sprue cutters, files and MEK.

Berlin and Munich - Model railroad shops or sights

I am headed to Berlin and Munich shortly on business, with transit stops in Frankfurt and possibly a day trip to Salzburg. Are there retail model railroad shops or sights that should not be missed? I am familiar with Miniatur Wonderland and cannot go there on this trip, just Berlin and Munich city centers, possibly Salzburg. Thanks.
