Any use for drywall in layout construction?
I saw a photo recently in the MRH forums recently that had included what looked like drywall as sub roadbed. I'm not sure that this is a good idea, but seeing it got me to thinking... I am currently building a new house and I have lots of drywall cuttoffs waiting to go to the dump.
Can anyone suggest *any* good use for this material in layout construction before I just throw it out?

Anyone out there modeling the ET&WNC in On30?
Many years ago, I dreamed of a G scale layout of the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina RR, which would take place in the height of the wartime commuter traffic to the rayon mills at Elizabethton, TN. My parents grew up just outside of the town and both my grandfathers were working the mills at the time as essential workers (Dad's father had been in WW1 anyway). Anyway, the staggering cost of anything in G scale and the room it'd take up made me give up the dream in 2007, getting rid of all my G scale stuff except a Bachmann ET&WNC # 12 locomotive.

Any experience with metal 3D printing?
In a discussion about steam locomotive drivers, it was suggested that 3D metal printing is now becoming available. I have questions, especially regarding the quality (can they be used without further machining?), finish (is the tread surface suitable?), strength (will they fail and/or warp over time?) and of course cost.
The Cenrail Illinois Railroad
Hello to everyone here at Model Railroad hobbyist. Always a visitor and never a member till now.
My first post is about my fictional railroad that, ironically shares the same name as a real railroad, that I didn't know about until recently.
My n scale railroad is the Central Illinois Railroad, based in Evans (ghost town), Illinois. Its locomotive fleet consist of:
Rock Island, 4-8-4, 5113
CNW, 4-6-0, 237
2 unlettered 2-8-0s
1 undecorated 0-8-0
2 undecorated Dash 9s
My Central Illinois Railroad Industries
With my locomotive close to being completed, I already decided and will have a few great industries that real railroads service: quarry, brick factory, concrete plant, brewery, steel mill, lumber company, a scrap yard, and a charcoal factory.
In terms of importance, steel mill, the quarry, scrap (scraps go to the steel mill), brick plant, concrete plant, lumber company, and charcoal company.
I do have a few names for some of the industris:
Coldington Steel
founded in 1872, open at current location in 1925
When you think of Appalachian railroading, what do you think?
As a model railroader, what do you think of when you think Appalachian? What brings Appalachia to mind when you see it?

North American TT - Why?
On one of my random web searches this morning, I came across a forum discussing North American TT modeling. Now, I'm all for oddball models, scales, and gauges, but as I read of the difficulties of finding models, having to use rebuilt toys, and regauging HO or N scale mechanisms to use on 12 mm track, I found myself wondering, why would anyone bother?
Afinia 3D Printer
Here are some test prints I did to see what the printer will do. In five months this will be old technology (It really is already, the better 3D printers are just our of my price range). These are HO scale. A lot of adjustments to make, and a learning curve to negotiate. These are straight from the printer, just the raft and support material removed, no real clean-up. Also, I need to get better at removing both.

Tough Paint
I'm working on repainting a model for a friend. It had previously been custom painted, so the first step is of course to strip it. I usually start with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and I did in this case. It did a great job of removing the decals (which had never been clear coated, apparently), but it barely touched the paint even after two days of soaking and vigorous scrubbing with a toothbrush and Bar Keeper's Friend.
